Join us for a #CraftRoomTour of Elizabeth Moad's craft room.

I like the fact that the space is small so most things I need are in arms reach or just a step away! I can sit at my desk and if I need an embellishment I just swivel the chair around and look in the drawers behind me. This sounds pretty lazy but actually it means there is no interruption when designing a project and the flow is continued without getting up from the desk.

Tell us about your space

I am lucky in that this room is all mine and for craft purposes only! This is where I do all my papercrafts and especially quilling. A large quilled design might take several hours over a few days to develop and create, so it’s important to me that I have a dedicated space to crafts that allows me to focus my attention. Also I can leave everything exactly where it is and return the next day without having to clear up.

The room is an “L” shape and gets the evening sun which is great in the summer but it is chilly in the room in winter months.

What have you done to make your space cosy, beautiful or inspiring?

I do need a radio on most of the time but I would not have a TV or computer as that would be too distracting. For additional warmth I have a small electric fire that keeps the room very cosy and I can shut the door and remain in the room for the whole of a dark winter evening.
I did cover the office swivel chair with patterned fabric to cheer it up!

How do you keep organized?

Well this is a constant struggle of mine so I really do not keep organised. I do know where everything is in the room and as it’s a small room I know things can’t go far! Every now and again I start a sort out but then decide I need everything in the room so abandon the tidy up.

Any tips & tricks for organising supplies?

Clear plastic storage boxes are preferable so you can see roughly what is inside, I do believe in being able to see where things are as if they are tucked away from sight they can be forgotten and not used. My main tip is don't stress about the mess, its your space so have it how you want it to be.

Which are your favourite possessions and are there any of your own creations on display?

I don’t think I have a favourite possession but my angle poise desk light and daylight bulb are essential for the close up papercraft work I do. I have pieces of original artwork in the craft room and around the house that have happy memories and these are important to me. I do have some pieces of my quilling work on display, partly as I haven’t got round to putting them in a safe place!!

How do you organise your inspiration and ideas?

I use an ipad alot and tend to keep lots of bits and things on and around my craft desk so they are in my immediate vision.
As I design alot of Christmas cards during summer months for the magazines I have a Christmas box that comes out for ideas and inspiration on what is usually the hottest day of the summer when making a snowman card...

Where do you look for inspiration?

It is true that inspiration is all around us in our daily lives, from going on walks to clothing designs and fashions. The internet of course helps but it is not a good idea to depend on that too much so a walk on the beach always helps for me.

If you had three wishes, what would you do to make it the dream space?

I would like more natural light in my craft room and would add a skylight, then I would add a sink and water as I often need to wash brushes, rubber stamps or my hands from glue, and lastly I would have a tiny elf that came to hoover the floor each night to keep it neat from all the paper bits that seem to accumulate!!
