My name is Karla Coronado I'm a 25 year old artist. I'm from a small city you might have never heard of. I'm obsessed with anything that has a twist of odd. Basketcase, weirdo and even outcast are all forms of flattery to me. When I was younger I was obsessed with finding out who I really am and wanted the answers to my question and any given notice, but I've come to realize that as greeting card as it sounds it's really the journey and the paths you choose both good and bad that are the fun parts of finally meeting yourself for who you are.
Have you always been creative and artistic?
When I was younger I used to draw on the walls all over my house, just ask my mother and father. When I grew up I went through a very emotional period, one I am still continuing to learn from. Drawing has and will always be my escape from the crazy black hole sometimes called life.
I'm not where I want to be but I know where I eventually want to go. I don't mind going through all the twists and turns to get there as long as I'm on the right direction.
How would you describe the style of your work?
I really don't know how to describe my style of work. I like to work in outlines. Because I feel like that's life. Odd but, I feel like you are who you are. That's the outline to it. Who you are as a person is your outline and it's up to you and the way you live and the actions you take that color it in.
What’s in your pencil case and what’s your favorite tool?
Fine tip sharpies.
That is the secret to the universe oh and aqua board. Amazing canvas even if it's for water color.
My favorite tool is my weirdo mind.
Who is your favorite superhero?
My superhero well there are (2) in my life. *drum-roll for emotional answer* It has to be my mother and grandmother (who I call Mama Pina). They both whether they believe or not are one of the strongest women I have every had the pleasure of knowing.
My mother came here as a small child, not knowing anything with just...well her. She has fought through so much and even with downs she manages to be herself. She doesn't change who she is. If you asked her she would tell you she thinks she's week. I wish she could look at herself the way I do her.
My grandmother is one of the TOUGHEST women who have lived on this earth. The challenges
If you could have one super power what would it be?
Other than then being able to teleport to any given location at any time. No more showing up late or getting stuck in 101 or 405 traffic ;)
I definitely would have to say I've always wanted to have the power of invisibility. I would love to observe and take in all around me in it's natural state with no influences. See the beauty in everything. Even a plastic bag. Major points to anyone who got that reference ;)
Where do you look for inspiration?
My inspiration comes from everything around me. I know that might sound like standard corny answer but it really is the truth. I love things that challenge the norm. One of my favorite bands is Panic! At the Disco and growing up the beauty in their lyrical language, their musical notes and even their artistic videos always inspired me to try the odd.
I love going to festivals and seeing art its many different forms. Tattoo art, Pin Up and Dia De Los Muertos are obsessions. The beauty in their confidence is just jaw dropping.
Who are your favorite artists or comic book authors?
My favorite artist would have to be a lot of tattoo artists. Their work is just amazing. There is this tattoo artist where I live and he is just, I can't even describe it and the best part is he gets a kick out of his drawings. He loves them as much as I want them on my body. One thing on his instagram that he does is he post things like "I want to tattoo this one someone" and it makes me I don't know happy that he loves his art form so much. His name is Frankie Mejia and man can that guy tattoo up a storm.
