Carol Rossetti

Carol Rossetti is a Brazilian designer and illustrator starting to come to terms with the word "artist" to define herself. She loves drawing, eating chocolate, reading and listening to music, although not necessarily in this order. She does watercolors, comics and feminism. Sometimes, all at once.

Have you always been creative and artistic?

I like to think so. Ive always loved art. I loved drawing when I was a kid, but I also experimented dancing, acting, sculpting... Those didn't work out, hahaha! But I guess drawing did, so I stuck with that one!

How would you describe the style of your work?

I'm afraid I can't see very well my own style, although some people told me I do have a very particular one. I like to draw what women, I like earthly tones and I like portraying what makes me feel good... So.... Perhaps feminine, feminist and cozy?

What’s in your pencil case and what’s your favorite tool?

My automatic pencil, a couple of erasers, some black ink brushes and regular pens. But usually my weapon of choice is watercolor.

Who is your favorite superhero?

Buffy Summers. Always.

If you could have one super power what would it be?

That is a tough question that I do ask myself quite often. But after thinking about it quite a lot, I believe I'd choose healing power: the absolute ability of healing myself and others of no matter what wound or illness. I guess it means Im getting old, hahaha!

Where do you look for inspiration?

I don't really. I live of my art and I need to produce something daily, otherwise I wont pay my bills. I can't wait for a magical inspiration to come or look for it in special places. Inspiration is something we practice to have, like a muscle. I do collect references and good feeling that different pieces of artistic work have made me feel, so it's pretty important to watch movies, read books, read comics, go to museums, get outside and talk to people (since human beings can surely be a neverending source of amazing stories), be in touch with other artists about creative processes. We need to feed ourselves with art and stories so we're always stimulating our own inspiration and creativity.

Who are your favorite artists or comic book authors?

There are so many artists who inspired me, but I feel like thanking some of them everyday for putting their work out there. Not all of them do comics, but they have all been a huge source of strength both in the best and worst times: Neil Gaiman, Craig Thompson, Jillian and Mariko Tamaki, Bianca Pinheiro, Iraville, Amanda Palmer, Joss Whedon, J. K. Rowling, Philip Pullman, Will Eisner, Marjani Satrapi.
