Learn how-to sew a tote bag in #ShopShowcase with I Want Fabric in Salford, Manchester.
How did you get started?
My family have been in the textile trade going back 3 generations and I had a passion for it. We built up many contacts over the years and as manufacturing died out we were still able to source these great quality fabrics at such low prices that we went online to offer our great range direct to the public.
Where are you located?
We're located in Salford Quays, just outside of Manchester city centre.
So we're in a great location for all the creative students at the Universities and the upholsterers in Manchester.
Which products do you specialise in?
We mainly specialise in upholstery fabrics, faux leathers, suede's, velvet, Damask's, digitally printed, and we have a huge range of children's fabrics too like Disney.
But we sell a whole lot more too, the odd fashion fabric, which we're hoping to branch out into more, and all the supplies you can think of, like ribbons, hessian, threads, upholstery studs, PVC cloths. We have a huge range.
Do you have a particular favorite product that you sell?
We sell a Glitz Crushed Velvet that is a best seller, we sell to a lot of upholstery companies, one in particular makes these stunning chesterfield chairs and sofas out of it. Plus velvet is so versatile that it can be used for just about anything and it comes in some gorgeous colours.
Same with our recycled leathers, its used to make a lot of chesterfield furniture or remodelling cars, and its reusing off cuts that would usually go to waste, so its a winner all round.
What's on the stereo?
Magic FM. All day, everyday. Because we have too many people to please so we stick to the same radio to avoid riots.
Where else should we visit in your area?
Well we're just outside the city centre so obviously Manchester centre. There's the shopping centre, hundreds of bars and restaurants, and there's also some amazing art galleries and museums. Plus in the other direction we have the Trafford Centre. So you would not be short of things to do if you visited us.
Do you host any workshops, classes or special events?
We used to run sewing classes, teaching people how to use sewing machines. We are hoping to get them back up and running again this year as they were a huge success.
Is there anything else you'd like us to know?
At the minute we're mostly upholstery, but due to us being so close to all the design universities, we're slowly going to branch out into fashion fabrics too.
And unlike a lot of fabric companies around we ship all over the world!
