Learn how-to dye yarn with Kool-Aid in #ShopShowcase with Starlight Knitting Society in Portland, Oregon.
How did you get started?
We had an amazing Kickstarter campaign in June of 2015. We raised over $20,000, mostly from our local community who were excited to have a yarn store in their neck of the woods. This is the second yarn store that I've started in my life, so putting it together was easy after that. Of course, a lot of volunteer hours went into making the shop the cozy knitting spot that it is.
Where are you located?
We are in the Southern part of Portland, Oregon in a little neighborhood called Woodstock.
Which products do you specialise in?
We specialize in knitting yarns for all walks of life. We especially love locally made or hand-dyed yarn. We have yarns and accessories from all around the world.
Do you have a particular favorite product that you sell?
We adore hand-dyed yarn from a dyer in Northern Ireland. Her name is Jess and her company is Olann. Every skein of yarn that comes to us is exceptional in it's depth of color. They're like little pieces of art.
What's on the stereo?
Our favorite Pandora stations are Buena Vista Social Club, Future Islands, Belle and Sebastian, and Lake Street Dive.
Where else should we visit in your area?
Portland is famous for our huge book store called Powell's books. We also have the most delicious and hilarious donut shop, Voodoo Doughnuts.
Do you host any workshops, classes or special events?
We are always having classes on knitting, crocheting, cross-stitching and more. We have trunk shows from indie dyers about a dozen times a year.
Is there anything else you'd like us to know?
Everyone is welcome at Starlight. Our community is an inclusive one and we really care about each and every one of our customers.
