Bake a Crema Catalana and some No Messing Meringues in #ABiteToEat with The Crema Caravan, a creme brûlée food truck that's been popping up all over Edinburgh!
How did you get started?
Callum is a chef and I (Mel) have a background in marketing and design. We spent a few years travelling before starting The Crema Caravan and saw the street food truck meet ups in California and wanted to be part of something similar; Being out on the road, doing events, markets and weddings. Crème brûlée was originally going to be the dessert option to complement something savoury but we saw a niche, made crème brûlée the main event and started the UK’s first Crème brûlée van. It all clicked into place when we spotted a vintage Renault van whilst working in France. We bought Florence in May 2014 and The Crema Caravan was born!
Where are you located?
We pop up all over the place- regularly at farmers markets but also at special events across the country!
We flit between our home in Edinburgh and our Kitchen in the Scottish borders. The best of both worlds really; a great place to source local ingredients but a little bit of city life too.
What are your specialities?
We make and sell crème brûlée and crema catalana. We've added a twist by offering different flavours of crème brûlée and adding toppings to them as well
Every delicious part is homemade, from our crème brûlées to the tasty toppings and sauces we add.
And of course they’re always burnt to order!
What's your personal favorite thing on the menu?
Our menu is an ever changing roster of treats depending on the season. We make the most of Scotland's pantry. In Summer time we use fabulous local berries and in Autumn/Winter we go for comfort food toppings like sticky toffee pudding or cookies and homemade toasted marshmallows.
Our latest creation is Honey and pistachio- a Scottish heather honey flavour brûlée (sweetened using honey instead of sugar) and topped with toasted pistachio nuts.
What's on the stereo?
A very eclectic mix! But to keep the peace we have BBC 6 music on in the kitchen and some spotify playlists for when we're out on the road.
Unfortunately, Florence is so noisy when she's running we can't hear the radio!
Where else should we visit in your area?
Edinburgers are spoilt for choice. That's why we live here!
You could spend months here and still only scratch the surface.
We have a few places we always gravitate to though:
The Roseleaf- our local. Great food, the finest pot-tails and always a warm welcome.
Calton Hill for a wander to watch the sunset.
North Berwick-
We love getting away from the city for the day and North Berwick is a particular favourite (and it's accessible by train). Steampunk coffee roasters and Bostock Bakery are our top stops there!
Do you host any special events?
Special events are what we do best. We can cater for weddings, parties, corporate do's, Friday office treats whatever and wherever you like! :)
Is there anything else you'd like us to know?
We're mobile so the best place to find out where we'll be is on social media- follow us on Twitter, Facebook or instagram @thecremacaravan
Do you have a favorite cafe, restaurant or bar in your town that we should feature? Send us a message!
