Projects and how to`s
Ah.. I just checked out the book tree link and the other 'projects' and 'how tos' by that person and they're a bit lacking on the how to bit aren't they. They are just ideas with pics taken off the web :S Don't know what thats about......
I am surprised that things like that are published to begin with....
Aren't the posts reviewed before they're published anyway? That person that posted the book tree says the exact same thing in the description of a lot of their "creations".... they all say "it was cute soo i made one" or some deviation of that.
I don't think they are reviewed, but they should be
one person uploaded a video that some person made on youtube, and wrote I saw this and wanted to share. To post on here, it has to be your project!
I had something like this happen with a how-to project of mine that I posted, where a member used a pic of mine and another member's that was from their version from THIS site, the only thing different was the text, and they posted it as their how-to instead of a version. Yeah it pissed me off and I reported and it was then removed. When you see something like that where someone uses any part of a project that is obviously not theirs, you report it. Unfortunately, anybody who posts anything on the net is subject to be copied somewhere, which is why I watermark anything I don't want to be copied, even here. All my projects are my own with pix that I took which is time consuming, so yeah it will infuriate most of us when people can't be honest and post what's actually their own work. Just report it and hopefully Tom will get around to deleting it.
To be honest though, I hardly ever check the projects anymore because of this and I also agree with Heather about posting something that's not really post worthy as a project. I'm mainly here on the boards and look at projects that were made for swaps. So every now and again I will browse through them, and it also irritates me that the same kind of how-to gets posted over and over again. Come on now, you can only make plarn one way!!
I have NO problem with people just clicking 'love'- all it means is that they like the project! It isn't a contract or anything: if this community started to be like some of the very sniffy ones with unwritten rules about inncocent clicks. To some, this is their daily visit website- for others it's a drop-in. Not everyone likes to post online in the same way and to get annoyed because people who don't upload 'love' things is starting down the slippery slope to a cliquey community that is only for a 'certain kind of user'. There are enough of them on the web grrrr.
Posting other people's projects is another matter- it's just plagiarism, passing someone elses work off as your own! I'm pretty sure it's illegal and could get COAK in trouble if not monitored/prevented so we should all keep an eye out.
But I do have sympathy for use of example photos (if cited as such)- several times I have made a recipe and not taken a photo of the ingredients, then i can't post the project. A photo of what (for example) encona sauce looks like off their website would be harmless and useful - all it means is that the person buying the product to make the (genuine) how-to. It's not the same as ripping off a project.
...as for very simple projects. It is hard to judge, when 'one' (ie anyone) is good at something, how basic a how-to might be appreciated!
In cooking terms- how to boil an egg, or in nail art, how to get a basecoat smooth. Sooo basic and one-step people who like that hobby would think it wasn't worth it- but those basic things are what someone starting out might need.
Ok,I see that my previous post is a bit unclear.I wanted to say, that if you post a scrub or something Im fine with it if there is a picture of a strawberry or honey or some of the ingredients, but the person should take a picture of the finished project too.So that there is not only a pic from the web there, but the project too.So we can see how the finished project looks like.
And I only posted that specific link to the book tree because I think thats the worst and that bugs me the most, but that user is not the only person here doing that and thats not the only project like that.
I just cant believe that after someone posted the link in a comment to the site from where she stole that piece of art,she still didn't delete the project!
I get lots of inspiration from other sites, but that's why we have the feature to link to the original project!
I dont know,I feel like we should do something about this user...Maybe report to Cat or something?
If the user is using someone else' work and passing it off as their own, report it.
Cat and Tom were at one point asking for help with the site, don't know if the offer is still available but maybe someone could volunteer for the screening of projects before approval.

when you see these tell Cat right away
I think we should start a thread specifically for videos we want to share with people.
That way it'll be better organized
Sedna those are the real sweater boots. The other one was the stolen one.
Now I've just realised there is a new thumb tack wedges! Do people not search for related stuff before they post a how to? I did the sweetie vodka and posted a how-to then someone did a skittles vodka (pretty much same thing) a few days later, and it got more favourites I was upset lol.
Hi Sedna. It's difficult to see who the original creator of the sweater boots is. The link you added that person has a website with designs on. The circle of embroidery is on the sweater boot is one of the designs on the website. Looks like she could be the victim of plagerism. Her how-to gives full detailed instructions unlike the ones that were first published on this site which used some of the same pictures and no detail. That person couldn't answer questions about them either. That's the problem with some people taking others projects. They can end up making the original creator look like they are copying when they have put in the hard work and time.
I try to make my how-to's so detailed that it would be difficult for someone to pass them off as theirs....LOL That, and it makes it easier to follow. I make links to sites where I have got patterns from as they usually have other useful stuff on too. I don't have any problems with anyone printing off my projects to make their own. It would be nice to think in a perfect world we could all keep to the spirit of sharing ideas no matter what skill levels we have. Unfortunately their will be rotton apples that will come along.
Kat....I remember doing a food project and getting hassle from my hungry family for taking photo's while making it and food doesn't photograph well. So I can understand if someone used a picture from a web page for that. So long as they showed photo's of how it was made I wouldn't see it as a problem.
I agree with Lolly & Violetta that nasty comments arn't necessary. It's hard to be diplomatic though if it's out & out plagerism. I agree best not comment and report suspect stuff to Tom as Creative said
It obviously doesn't pay to plagerise as blogs like this show that people notice
