Long hair ideas?

So I have rather long hair, well at least to today's standards. It's elbow length, stair and thick, it used to be layered but it's been about four months since I've had it cut so it's short of grown out.

My point is thanks to how thick it is and the ever increasing length and maybe it's just the way I wear it (usually in pig tail braids or just a bun)but it's starting to put strain my scalp. And I really wanna keep the length and eventually grow it out more but I don't know how long that will last. I was also thinking if I ever do get it cut I might want to get a perm because I love curly hair and it's they only thing I'd ever be willing to damage my hair for but there are perm haters in my family so it'd be hard getting away from them Happy I was told by my hair dresser that long hair doesn't hold a perm very well even though my hair holds a curl fairly well already because it's already kinda wavyish and so freaking healthy. I used to put it in curlers all the time but the length it is now it takes for ever to put it in curlers every night.
So my question is does anyone have and cuts they would recommend that would keep most of the length but get rid a lot of the weight? Or if not does anyone know a good long length that would still hold a perm?

Because your hair is thick, I'd suggest getting your hair thinned out by layering it again. It'll get rid of some of the weight. The only other way I can think of would be to cut it to about shoulder length. I have extremely thin hair so I don't think I can be of much help, sorry..

You could have your hair stylist thin your hair a little bit. Or an easy way I use to curl my hair was a curling mousse and cream. I used Tresemme flawless curls mousse and Herbal Essences tousle me softly finishing touch cream and I also used the tousle me softly shampoo/conditioner. I would just put in the mousse and cream after I got of the shower and my hair would be curly into the next day.

Out of curiosity, why do you want it long if you always wear it pulled up? This is a bit conflicting with what you seem to want no? If you just want it long for the sake of having it long but then pull it up in a bun all the time then I think you really want it short and just are unwilling to realize it.

Just something you might want to consider thinking about.

But as for long hair styles about the only thing you can do is put layers in it. There are ways of making it more edgy if you want. I suggest a google image search for ‘long hairstyles’

i had a cream/lotion from the salon that i squeezed-massaged in my hair with my perm and it helps the curls, that could possibly help you natural curls.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions. I don't usually use product in my hair but I'll have to try the Tresemme mousse, I use one of their shampoos but I don't think it's the tousle me softly one.

I only wear it in a bun when I sleep or when working, I usually wear it down, I guess I did not mention that. I think long hair is beautiful and feminine and I like wearing it long even though I don't always show it off. You can still see the length when it's braided and there are a bunch of hair styles I want to try but my hair is too short I've tried modifying them but most of the time it looks silly with the length I have at the moment. But with the way it's going at the moment I'll probably have to cut whether I want to or not. I just know every time I cut it in the past I feel how short it is and find it uncomfortable and I couldn't wait until I grew it back again... Thanks though I'll probably try to get an appointment with my stylish and ask her about ideas.

the great thing about the cream i used was it didn't feel lie there was anything in my hair after, like what hairspray feels like.

Did you use any particular brand or is it just hair cream for permed or curly hair?

I've got long very thick hair. I have layers through it so its not too heavy and falls nicely. Make sure the layers are all the way through and not just at the front. Some of my layers are as short as chin length. I tend to be quite unimaginative about the way I wear my hair. Its too thick to plait into one braid and bits always poke out, so its normally down or in a pony tail.

I'm hoping to get it cut before Christmas so I'll probably get it layered. I'll have to mention getting it all layered because the last time I got it cut all the stuff in the back was just one length she only did the sides and front. :/
Sometimes I do two smaller braids in the front with only a little handful of hair (or with two full pigtails)and pin those on top like milk maid style. If I pin them in the right place the weight of it it doesn't bother me. But yeah with the layers you have to pin everything down to prevent chunks of hair sticking out at odd angles. Happy

Yeah having layers does limit some styles you can do, but it does make it look better when its just down on its own.

I found this the other day:

its got lots of ideas for ways of wearing long hair if you want something a bit different, maybe for a special event. I especially like the messy rope braids and might try it out for a date I have on Friday.

I have long hair too. I wear it in a ponytail/messy bun or lately a braid to the side. Its really pretty. Or two braids on each side?

Thanks Libby for the blog link some of the styles are amazing! I know I get a lot of ideas from Torrin http://www.youtube.com/user/torrinpaige?feature=watch I only wish my hair was as long as hers. Sadly I don't know if I can go very long again when I was 15 it was down to my hips but I had constant headaches from the strait so I finally gave it up and donated it. Happy I've missed it ever since.

Hamsterdance yeah I've been doing the same to when I'm not I want it out of the way. I love letting it do it's own thing but when I do it gets SO knotted! Happy buns are an easy fix and done right they look cute too. ^^
