Thinking of cutting my hair, what do you think?

OK, so I've been growing my hair for about 3 years now to get it to the length it is now. Over the past year it has been getting rather annoying, ie. getting knotty, getting, in my food, I have to tie it up at night. As I've been looking at some pics it's looking quite dull with no volume - I'm guessing the length is weighing the hair down. Does any one have the same issues and does a good hair cut help? And also do you think it would suit me?

I basically just want to make it more manageable.

Here's my hair now:

My hair is straightened in the last one (it really doesn't straighten very easily)

This is the kind of style I'd want:

OK, it's not that that much of a difference but would still be taking 3/4 inches off and shorter layers.

I like your hair how it is. I wouldn't cut it. try braiding it at night to give it some texture, and the Bed Head volumizing stuff works well for me.

Your hair is beautiful as it is, but you are right when you say that the length is weighing it down. If volume is important to you, try to get a slightly shorter cut with layers that will frame your face. I think that will flatter your face. Also, you could try side bangs. I have them, and I love them!

Actually, I think I'm going to go for it - but as you said Olivia, slightly shorter and more layers, and have a side parting for a change - can't do bangs though - they gave me headaches when I had them once before.

I just found some old pics of me with hair about the length I want it (these were 2 and a half years ago and I've lost 35 pounds since then!)

Ooh, a side part would definitely look good on you!

I think if you're thinking about cutting your hair then you should go for it and not worry about other people's opinions. I've had my hair down my back before and made an appointment to see my stylist to cut it all off so it was boy short. She about died when I did it but it looked really cute and I loved it. I say do what you want. It's only hair, it will grow back and why not have some fun with it?

First off congrats on the weight lose!
As for the hair problems, I would suggest layers to keep it from getting tangled. I also agree with Myka about braiding your hair at night, my hair is mid-thigh so I braid every night and don't have alot of tangles even though it's long. Also try braiding it the opposite way you want it to end up that way when you take it out you have volume, you can also just blow dry your roots with some mouse or something that will help.
As for the dullness, I do a part vinegar part water rinse about once a month, it gets rid of the product buildup and your hair will be so clean and shiny it will squeak! They also sell clarifying shampoos that help.

CLARIFICATION-When I say your hair will "squeak" I am exaggerating. Considering I have been asked to be an Aveda event hair model and their stylist told me I have the healthiest hair he has ever seen I don't think the vinegar rinse is doing any damage to my hair. Vinegar is alot less harsh than most shampoo ingredients so unless you are really concerned about drying out your hair I wouldn't worry about it.

Felecity! Oh no you don't want your hair to squeek! That's a bad sign! It means you've removed all the natural oils from your hair and is really drying and damaging.

I have longish hair (Not nearly as you girls) but it has been that long in the past and I've always had very few tangles. I've never braided my hair at night or done anything like that to keep it from tangling. I just make sure I give it a good brushing at night. Brushing your hair repeatidly helps bring down your natural oils from your roots to your tips thus giving you a natural conditioning treatment. Also you shouldn't wash your hair daily. At most I wash mine once every other day although I've been known to go 5 days between washing if my hair isn't greasy.

Also, if you're not already, give your hair a deep conditioning treatment once a week when you have time. That can help bring some of the health back in your hair.

I wouldn't say I have ever done anything special to my hair (maybe it's just genetics) but a lot of the time I don't even need to brush my hair. No matter how long it is I can often get away with just combing my fingers through it. However, I do have a full head of hair and it takes forever just to thin it out. I haven't had it thinned out in a year or two and it's not been a problem for me though which is surprising. Usually when I go in to get a hair cut they spend a half hour just thinning it out before they start to cut it. I have a real mane of hair. But I just try to keep it well conditioned and I don't worry about washing it very often. Hair doesn't need to be washed as much as people think.

Hey Girls, thanks for all the advice. I ended up cutting it in the end took about 4 inched off, side parting and more layers. I feels so much healthier now and as I thought it has more volume.

I do usually try to do deep conditioning treatments once a week or so and I use serum everytime after I wash my hair. I rarely use heat on my hair and leave it to dry naturally. I think my hair became damaged either from dyeing ( but not much, only bout once every 3 months) and just sheer lack of haircuts.

Just after having my hair cut I got a sinus infection (boohoo!) so haven't had a chance to show it off, but the one night I did go out I got quite a few compliments so I assume its suiting me. I might still grow it back out with the shorter layers, I guess I'll just see how I feel.

Felecity - I will remember the vinegar trick, I assume you do that before shampoo or your hair will smell?

Ooh, can you please post a few picks of your new hair, Tasha? I would love to see it. (P.S. My friend just got over a sinus infection. Doesn't sound fun.)

My conditioner smells strong enough that I can shampoo, then vinegar rinse, then condition and no one can smell it. I would just make sure you use hot water to mix because the vinegar can be cold (p.s. it burns your eyes)
