Hard Scratchy Yarn for Dishcloth?

A good friend of mine loves crochet dishcloths for her kitchen. She says she used to be able to buy them from a cute old lady who used a hard, scratchy, cotton yarn good for scrubbing. I have looked at Sugar and Cream and other cotton yarns but they seem very soft. Does anyone have any suggestions? Has anyone used unpolished hemp yarn? Thanks for any ideas you may have.

I have a friend who knits dish scrubbing clothes out of old plastic bags. She just loves them!! I'm not a knitter, but I have a couple and they work very well, but don't hold up for more than a month or so. Still, it works and it's re-using!

I have also seen dishcloths made from plastic bags and have heard that they are good for scrubbing. I have just recently gotten into crocheting so I really can't give much more advice than a nod to the plastic bag idea. I posted a tutoorial a while back on how to make the plastic yarn if you are interested in giving it a try.
