Any ideas for a BELLYDANCE COSTUME? (or gothic, burlesque, whatever!)

Hi everyone! I'm lookin' for ideas because I'd like to make my own skirt for dancing... I'm taking a course of oriental dance, in wich we dance many kind of music, from arabian to balcanic and gipsy... I think I'm gonna try the burlesque skirt (http://www.cutoutandkeep.net/projects/burlesque_bustle_skirt) but much longer... Because it's my first time sewing a skirt (and my mom, the sewing machine owner, doesn't know how to do it!), any opinion or advice is very very welcome! =)

Well I can't really give you much advice as I am a very basic novice sewer so you probably know more than me. I Googled "Belly Dancers" and then clicked on image to have a look, that's probably the best way to start as some of them have slight variations from one another, so knowing what you want is a good start.

If you wanted one like this: http://www.anti-gravitypoledancingstudio.com/belly_dancer.jpg
I guess that could be made in several ways as it is very minimal, it could be a bit of elastic round the waist covered in fabric with loose long dangly bits of material either sewn or tied on. Or it could be a loose-ish peice of material made into some sort of waistband, with again loose long dangly bits of material either sewn or tied on. I'm just guessing by the way, I think a lot of this will probably be guess work.

Whereas this one: http://www.barynya.com/images/belly_dancer_ny.jpg
Would be like making or buying a normal gypsy skirt and adding some embelleshments on them

Like I said this is purely my guess work, I hope someone with some sound experience can explain it to you better then me and moreso correct any mistakes and misjudgements that I have made. I hope this is somewhat helpful...?
