He wants me to pay him so i can do my job???

Hokoay, so I'm a professional model, and I have been for years. I've worked in a variety of settings, venues, medias, etc.

Recently I was contacted by someone who wants to put together a calendar. I thought it would be a great project, and so I agreed. The next thing I know, he is sending me information on HOW MUCH I WOULD HAVE TO PAY HIM in order to be in his calendar (not to mention travel, food, and lodging fees), and to add insult to injury, he says that he will not pay me because I haven't appeared in any calendars before (which is untrue)!!!

Uhm. REALLY?

Needless to say, I informed him that I am a professional, and will not be participating in the project. I am a professional. I do NOT pay for others to take my photo. They pay me.

Thats shit. Its a good job you are an experienced model as I could imagine it would be easy to get sucked into to it, especially if he sold it as if he was recruiting models for his calendar. I can imagine someone just starting out might be a little unsure as to whether this is normal or not and just pay. Does he say anything about whether you get paid if and when the calendar sells?

Yes, when it sells, the models apparently get a cut. In any case, that's NOT the professional way to go about it--I bet in the professional circles, he's known for being a scammer. I can't say for sure, since what he is doing is legal, technically. Still, a legitimate modeling agency or job will never make the model pay ANYTHING (unless, of course, they help the model pay for something in advance, but that doesn't normally happen unless the model travels).

I think the whole thing is a scam if the dude was wanting you to pay for everything. Wow, Crazy scammers!! Glad you showed him and declined his "deal".

And speaking of calendars, how kewl would it be if us at CO&K did our own calendar! Happy

Sounds like a scam - there were loads of these around in the 90s, ones where you'd pay 'up front' for all sorts of things... being featured, acting agencies, gigs, vanity publishers who never published etc'. How appalling that it still goes on. Unfortunately with any popular job, people are going to try to take advantage. Sad

That's crazy to pay him. It's got to be a scam, think how much he would make if he got loads of models to pay HIM for you pictures to be taken, then a load more money he'd make for selling the calenders!!!

OMG we soooo should do a CO+K Calender that would be FAB!!!!

Ahahahahahaha I've had similar things happen to me, Rachie. It would be hilarious if it weren't so offensive and annoying! What kills me is that usually, the photographers trying to get me to pay them aren't even all that great!
