PETA?
Does anyone else here support PETA? What other organisations do you support?
I am a proud PETA member for 2 years now! Being a strict vegetarian for 5 years (and i am converting to vegan in 6 months when I turn 18 because my parents wont let me now) I love peta and what they stand for. I also support the humane society of the united states.
Wow nice, I've been a vegetarian for 2 years now. I've occasionally screwed up and eaten meat though because my parents eat a LOT of meat and force me to eat it too otherwise I go hungry. I love organisations like PETA and I wish I could become more involved with them
I don't agree with some of their views. Like, I would never splash paint or oil on a fur coat or anything. I think that since it's already been killed, at least let it's skin provide something. I kinda see it the same way as I see someone hunting. If you're gonna kill a deer, you had better eat it or something. Don't just let it sit there for nothing.
I've been a lacto ovo vegetarian for eight years. I can't be vegan, my views differ from that of most. But I like to support smaller organizations and such.

I think Peta makes valid points, but I take everything they do and say with a grain of salt. I am for the ethical treatment of animals and I am vegan, but I think a lot of their material only reaches the people that already know about it. Personally, I don't want to be bombarded with imagery of tortured animals all of the time. I know it's out there and I do my best to spread the word about it and tell others, but most people that aren't already paying attention to it don't want to hear it... and the people that know about it get immersed in it and eventually believe that it's the only way people treat animals. I believe humans and animals can live together harmoniously, but I don't believe they are here for our use. I find that kind of thinking egotistical.
I'm not against PETA, because I believe in the cause, but I'm not for it because I don't always agree with the methods. However, sometimes drastic measures are called for to get people's attention... and in this day and age, that's sometimes the only way you're going to get through to people.
While I agree with what PETA stands for (I'm a HUGE animal lover. I hate even squishing a spider!), but I think their tatics are a little to agressive for my taste.
Though I do keep in mind that they have good intentions and they're one of the groups that's speaking for those without voices (sometimes they're screaming, but sometimes that's the only way people will hear).
Though a PETA rep. really helped me with a project (when I did my "Animal Cruelty in the Cosmetic Industry: Human Vanity Gone Too Far" for my zoology class) and I suppose I adopted a bit of their tatics, such as showing the poor abused animals. While it's terrible to know that kinda stuff goes on, and it's unpleasent, I can see how it works: My teacher told me to show it to her ahead of time, and told me I needed to put warnings on my project and a lot of people who saw it either stopped buying products from certain companies, or were generally angry or upset.
The animals pain can cause a lot of emotions, and sometimes we as people don't want to feel those emotion, I suppose.
I agree with what they stand for, and I'm most definitely not super informed on them or anything, but from what I've heard WHICH MAY NOT BE TRUE, they fight fire with crazy-ass fire. /run-on sentence
Although I do appreciate their list of cosmetics and hygiene companies that don't test on animals.
I agree that some of their methods are a bit stupid but I agree with what they stand for, and I also love their lists of companies that don't test on animals. =]
Plus I love their contests and interviews with bands.
PETA has managed to developed a very bad reputation in Aus. I won't go too much into it because I don't want to offend anybody.
I'm a shelter volunteer, an animal welfare activist, assist in emergency rescues and relief and am currently premed to become a veterinarian.
But no, I don't and will never support PETA.
I love all of what PETA does. And all the "bad things" people think PETA do ...i think is completely misunderstood and taken out of context. Some people even go out and say that THEY torture animals, which is the biggest bullshit i have ever heard. People just dont understand how PETA works from the inside.
I've studied them thoroughly (out of curiosity) & watched documentaries & everything, and now understand all of their extreme antics, and believe that it IS the right thing for them to do. ...i Do wish they wouldnt be so grossly aggressive sometimes. ...because i think they make all vegan/vegitarians look like lunatics. But thats my only beef with them.
But do u think if they just stood outside & passed out fliers, if anyone would stop & listen? No. Thats the sad truth.
I could talk about this forever, but yeah. I support any charity/organization that helps animals in any ways. And have been a proud vegetarian/vegan for 6 yrs.
I'm with Lussuria on this one. Again, without wanting to go into a lot of detail...they have in the past exaggerated and used incorrect facts in their media campaigns in the UK. If the cause is just and deserving, and you feel right about what you are doing, you should not LIE in your campaigns because then it calls ALL research being done in those fields into question by your enemies (like the UEA global warming scandal).
They also released animals into the wild which has (documented cases) severely damaged local ecosystems, then the released animals die because it isn't their natural habitat.
I am an RSPB and RSPCA member, but would never support PETA because they are responsible for harming 'non media friendly' animals (slimy ones that live in ponds) when releasing the furry mammalian ones our brains are wired to have more sympathy with.
I've been a member of PETA for almost two years, and I'm a vegetarian. Sometimes I do cheat and have a little bit of meat.
Hell, I've got my mom converting to vegetarianism because of a PETA thing I gave her to read.
Yes, I support PETA! I've been a vegetarian my whole life and I think it's important to educate, but I do not force views or any forceful tactics/practices as some people believe all PETA members do (it is a stereotype!). I send out PETA mini-flyers and stickers with all my orders on Etsy to help spread the word.
I was a vegetarian for 2-3 years, and PETA info helped me with that, but because of health complications, I have gone back to eating red meat. I couldn't really get into PETA, though I did create an account and try.
I love animals and will do pretty much anything to help them. My parents and I basically ran a kitty shelter in our (large) backyard. We fed, wormed, and vaccinated the ferile cats ourselves, and actually got a "bulk" discount on getting them fixed one winter. xD Additionally, I used to volunteer at my local shelter before I moved, and recently, Shlomi and I have adopted an abandoned kitten off the street--and he is a dog person!!
I really couldn't get deeply into PETA, though. I prefer to do it on my own--I suppose it is similar to people who are religious, but prefer to worship on their own as opposed to affiliating with a type of church/synagogue/etc.
