How did you get started?
My name is Charlotte Tøndering. I have a textile education with a specialization in knitwear and for over 30 years I have worked with the subject as a designer and teacher. In the 1980s I founded a small knitting company. Eight years ago in September 2010 I became a shop owner, and I love having my own shop, working with costumers and knitting projects. Besides I continue to design and teach.
Where are you located?
Tøndering Strik is located in the wonderful Latin Quarter of Aarhus on one of the colorful, old streets: Graven 3, 8000 Aarhus C Denmark.
Which products do you specialise in?
We focus on high quality yarns in natural fibres. One wall is dedicated to Japanese yarns from ITO, and another wall to the Danish brand, Isager. But we also stock delicate cashmere, organic cotton and Islandic wool. Most of the yarns are quite fine with the idea of buying several yarns of different qualities and knit with two or more strands held together. This creates some really interesting, sophisticated effects shown in the shop with numerous samples.
Do you have a particular favorite product that you sell?
We are yarn nerds with a great fascination of the material. Designs and patterns with simplicity, good fit and a beautiful textile expression are among my favorites.
What's on the stereo?
No music in the shop... but working at home with designs Lana Del Rey and Sia are good company on the stereo.
Where else should we visit in your area?
In our neighborhood you will find a lot of interesting small shops among cafés and restaurants. This old part of Aarhus is very bohemian and with a nice relaxed atmosphere.
Do you host any workshops, classes or special events?
We have many workshops, classes and events: Saturday and Sunday workshops with breakfast or a delicious lunch, knitting and wine-tasting, knitting and coffee-tasting, concert and knitting... And every Summer we have a Yarn-crawl-event together with 9 other yarn shops in town.
