Come behind the scenes at Cassiefairy for a #CraftRoomTour and see Cassie's craft caravan in her garden.
I love how bright the space is - with windows on all four sides and a stable-door, the caravan always feels really light and airy. It's lovely to fling open the wide end window on sunny days and let the fresh air breeze through.
Tell us about your space
My caravan is about 6ft wide by 10ft long but it's certainly big enough for me. I work at the original bench seats and table during the day, but these can be folded down into a bed a night, so my office doubles-up as a guest room too!
What have you done to make your space cosy, beautiful or inspiring?
I made my own curtains and roman blinds for the caravan so that I can keep the space feeling cosy in the evenings. I also have a lovely ornate glass cabinet that looks just like one that my nan used to have, so I can keep all my favourite keepsakes on show to inspire me.
How do you keep organized?
I have got plenty of storage - I can't bear not knowing where things are when I need them. Plus, I like to keep the small space tidy - it would get unbearably messy in the caravan if I didn't have somewhere to tidy my stuff away to. The width of the caravan door meant that I needed to fund flat-pack or narrow storage in order to get it into the space so I got some multi-purpose storage and turned a couple of TV cabinets into a sideboard.
Any tips & tricks for organising supplies?
I've allocated a cupboard for each of my crafts (such as keeping knitting needles, wool and patterns together) in order to keep myself organised. That way I always have everything to hand when I get the urge to create something. I even have a 'teddy bear' cupboard with fabric, eyes and joints! You never know when the mood to make a teddy bear will strike!
Which are your favourite possessions and are there any of your own creations on display?
My favourite possessions are my collection of Maneki Neko. Every time a friend heads off to somewhere exotic they bring back a lucky cat for me. The shinier and tackier the better! Of course my sewing machine is also one of my favourite possessions. I spent a lot of time researching the purchase to make sure I found the best product at a reasonable price. My Janome sewing machine has served me well for 4 years without a hitch now!
How do you organise your inspiration and ideas?
I love clothing patterns so I pull out ALL patterns that I find in magazines and pick up bundles of retro patterns from the car boot sale. I keep them all in a couple of large files and love to flick through them to decide on my next project. They're not in any order though, so I sometimes pick out a dress pattern before realising that it's a child size - not a problem, I relish the challenge of scaling it up to adult size if it's possible!
Where do you look for inspiration?
When I'm stuck for ideas I like to get out of the caravan and go for a walk. Just looking at the landscape (or town or sea, depending on where I am) usually gets the ideas flowing and I'll take some photos if I see some colour combinations or shapes that inspire me. If I'm walking with a friend I like to talk through my plans and one idea tends to lead on to another.
If you had three wishes, what would you do to make it the dream space?
I bet 'more storage' is on everyone's wishlist, isn't it?! I'd love more of the small cupboards that I already have BUT I'd need more space to put them in - the caravan is already pretty full! I'd love to have a sit/stand desk so that I can adjust my desk depending on the task I'm doing. I prefer to write on my laptop while standing up but like to sit down to sew. The final wish would be to have my cats with me at all times, but for them NOT to lie down on top of the project I'm working on just as I'm about to start crafting - I'm sure they know that this is a sure-fire way to make me stop working, haha!
