Free pattern for your own minion! Just in time for the sequel...
I’ve been so excited about this because it’s the first amigurumi I’ve made that’s of an actual, established character that I’ve been really 100% satisfied with the final result (much as I love Bane Bat). He whipped up so easily too – every thing I tried went perfectly which almost never happens! Now there are loads of Minion patterns out there, and mine is just adding to the bunch. But the great thing is, every pattern I’ve seen is different, just like the minions so I don’t feel like I’m repeating or competing with anyones work.

Plus most of the ones I found have two eyes and I think the one eyed guys are cuter.

Also posted on my blog.

  • Step 1

    The Essentials:

Hook: 2mm (to make the size shown which is about 3 inches tall, 1.5 inches wide. Bigger hook, bigger body).

Wool: DK in chosen yellow, dark blue, black and grey; scrap DK in black

Others: Small bit of white, black and red felt, black fabric paint/ marker, clear plastic bottle (you’ll see why later on)

    Terms:

    Sc: Single Crochet
INC: Increase (2sc in one stitch)
DEC: Decrease (sc two stitches together)
    SL ST: Slip stitch

The Despicable Me Minion is crocheted in continuous rounds.

    Body

    Ch2/ magic ring in yellow

Round 1: 6sc into 2nd ch from hook/ centre of magic circle [6]
    Round 2: INC around [12]
    Round 3: {1sc, INC} repeat around [18]
    Round 4: {2sc, INC} repeat around [24]
    Round 5 – 13: Sc around [24]

NOTE: If you want a less squat minion, one of the taller ones, then you can add as many 24Sc rows here as you like. Customisation win!

    Round 14: {2sc, DEC} repeat around [18]

    Stuff

    Round 15: {1sc, DEC} repeat around [12]
    Round 16: DEC around [6]

Finish off and sew in all the tails.

(I know that it looks like my minion is wearing underwear. Now, I think it’s a cute little addition and I’d love to tell you it was planned that way, but in reality I just realised near the end that I was running out of yellow wool and I needed some for the arms, so I had to switch. It doesn’t matter though because it’s going to be covered by his overalls. Just make sure you check how much wool you have before you start, which I clearly forgot to do!)

    Overalls

Ch2/ magic ring in dark blue

Round 1: 6sc into 2nd ch from hook/ centre of magic circle [6]
    Round 2: INC around [12]
    Round 3: {1sc, INC} repeat around [18]
    Round 4: {2sc, INC} repeat around [24]
    Round 5 – 7: Sc around [24]

NOTE: If you elongated your body, you’ll need to elongate your overalls. Just make sure you’re doing 6 rows of 24Sc LESS than you used in the body.

Do not finish off yet! I did on the photo, but to make your life easier, don’t. Go on to step 4.

    Step 4

You now need to add the little chest flappy bit (technical term of course).

    Round 8: 19 SL ST around, 5Sc, Ch1 and turn [24 + 1ch)
    Row 9: 5Sc, Ch1 and turn [5 + 1ch]
    Row 10: 5Sc [5]

Finish off and leave a really long tail for sewing.

    Step 5

Pop your minion inside the shell, and sew around the rim to keep it in place. If you’re making a keyring take the end of the tail up to the top of the head and create a loop for the split ring.

(Oops – photo’d from the back instead of the front. It’s there, believe me!)

We’ll add straps after we’ve added arms, so keep the dark blue wool nearby. Also for the legs of course.

    Arms (make 2)

The arms are long but thin tubes, and I always have issues with doing thin tubes using in the round crochet, so instead I did mine like this:

    Ch 6 in yellow
Row 1: starting in second chain from hook 5Sc, Ch1 and turn [5 + 1ch]
    Row 2: 5sc [5]

Finish off, fold in half long ways and sew up the long edge.

    Make a hand by:

    Ch2/ magic ring in black

Round 1: 6sc into 2nd ch from hook/ centre of magic circle [6]
    Round 2: Sc around [6]
    Round 3: Sc around [6]

Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing, then sew the black onto the yellow:

Now we’re getting somewhere. The last thing we need now is fingers. Three per hand made as follows:

    Ch 3 in black
Row 1: starting in second chain from hook Sc2, Ch1 and turn [2 + 1ch]

Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing. Make six, and sew three onto each hand as shown.

    Legs (make 2)

CH7 in dark blue , join in 7th ch from hook with a SL ST to make a ring.
    Round 1: Sc around [6]
    Round 2: Sc around [6]

Finish off and leave a long tail for sewing.

    For the boots:

    Ch2/ magic ring in black
Round 1: 6sc into 2nd ch from hook/ centre of magic circle [6]
    Round 2-3: Sc around [6]
    Round 4: DEC around [3]

Finish off and weave in the tails. Flatten them down a bit so that the ring of 3 is at the front, like a toe.

Sew both bits together, and it should look like this.

    Step 9

Sew your legs on to the bottom and your arms on either side of your minion (yes, I forgot the photo sewing the arms on separately!)

We’re getting there! To finish the clothing, we need to add the overall straps. Ch20 in dark blue, wrap it around the body and secure it at either side of the chest panel, and in the middle at the back (sew it over a few stitches - back view shown as front is self explanatory!

    Hair

I made my hair by looping in strands of black yarn. It’s simple, you’ll probably know how to do it already, but if not, here’s how:

1: Push your hook through the a stitch in the head and grab a loop of yarn.
2: Draw the loop through the stitch.
3: Pull the tail ends through the loops and pull tight to secure.
4: Trim to the desired length.
5: Repeat until you have enough hair.

    Mouth

Using black felt, make a semi-circle mouth. Make some teeth with white felt and add a little bit of red felt as a tongue (optional). Glue it all together and stick it in place.

    Goggles

Firstly you need an eye. Cut a circle of white felt and put a blob of black in the centre as a pupil. Sew/ glue it to the Minions face.

  • How to make a food plushie. Despicable Me Minion - Step 14
    Step 14

    To create the goggles:

Ch11 (or enough to go around your eyeball) in grey. Join in the last stitch using a SL ST to create a ring.
    Round 1: Sc around [10]
Finish off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Grab your clear plastic (I used a lucozade bottle, nice smooth plastic). Cut out a circle as big as your Minion’s eye. Slip your plastic lens into the centre of your circle.

  • How to make a food plushie. Despicable Me Minion - Step 15
    Step 15

Sew the goggle lens around the eye. You should be able to just see the light reflected in the lens in the photo left.

To make the strap Ch20 (or enough to go around your Minion’s head) in black and sew it in place running from one side of the goggles around the back to the other side.

    Step 16

All you need to finish off now is a little black stitch on the front of the overalls (there’s a ‘G’ symbol in actuality, but this Minion is too small for the detailing – or you could make one out of felt I suppose).
