Looking For Something New: Who's Your Favorite Author?

I think two of my favorite authors would have to be Orson Scott Card (of Ender's Games) and Clive Cussler (of the Dirk Pit Novels) They both have tons of books, so if you ended up liking thier style, you could stay busy for a while. Good luck at the library.

Well, I don't know if you like supernatural stuff, but I love the City of bones books by Cassandra Clare. And Ellen Hopkins. I have every one of her books and have read them multiple times. Also, Holly Black has a faerie series that is awesome and a new series called the Curse Workers.

I like Anne Rice, she wrote all The Mummy books which were made into films

For a second there I thought you meant Elizabeth George Speare- a young adult historical writer- I loved her books when I was younger and have a couple of them still on my shelf.

I love Peter Beagle as he is the King of fantasy but I refuse to purchase from him since I ordered an audio book 6 years ago through his publisher and it still hasn’t even been made yet! But my university library is well stocked on his novels so I got a good fill on that. Aside from his most famous novel, The Last Unicorn, I really loved his short story Lila the Werewolf.

I also recently got into and love The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins. The first two are brilliantly written- the last one is a bit rushed but I can forgive her of that, as I forgave Rowling for rushing some of her books towards the middle.

I like classic novels also- Alcott is amazing! She has books out there that are great that no one ever talks about because they are so wrapped up in Little Women- Eight Cousins and Rose in Bloom are two of my favorites. Also like L.M. Montgomery who wrote the Anne of Green Gables books- those are brilliant and not at all an “easy ready”.

For more contemporary reads I like Amy Tan, best known for writing The Joy Luck Club and Yiyun Li who wrote A Thousand Years of Good Prayers- which I just discovered was turned into a movie. I find that fascinating because when I met Yiyun in 2006 she was one of the New York Times’ upcoming writers to watch and now I can.

I also like Their Eyes were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston and Family by J. California Cooper- both books I was introduced to when I took Black Literature in college. Some of the best books I’ve read were thanks to that class and the only downside was that the class was at 8:30 in the morning.

Well, I've read Rice, Montgomery and Alcott, and I believe I've read Tan and Beagle, too, but can't say for certain.

Both Ender's Games and City of Bones caught my eye from their respective shelves, so what with theire being blessed here, I'll have topick em up

As for th'others, never heard of them, so I'll be writing them down.

Oh, I also forgot the Hunger Games series. It is amazing! Even though I think it may be turning into Twilight a little bit, I really hope that doesn't happen because it's not like that at all.

Vernies- the last Hunger Games book came out last August. Pretty sure there is nothing about it like Twilight- it's far more graphic than Twilight would ever be.

Melanie Rawn is pretty good but avoid the Ruins of Ambrai trilogy as I've been waiting for the final book for over 10 years now

Patrick Rothfuss is good but only has the first book out so far... but when I say good I mean really good...

you could try Graceling and Fire by Kristin Cashore both very good again.

Maria V. Snyder is another good author and her 'study' books are really good.

All of Trudi Canavan's books are good (I've read all but the most recent ones)

And finally for something a bit different try the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher for a different kind of Fantasy novel or Garth Nix's Abhorsen Trilogy for something a bit more zombie fantasy and a bit less run of the mill

oh and for something a bit weird...

and finally my all time favourite that i've read so many times the books are falling apart and I need new ones:

Halfblood Chronicles by Andre Norton and Mercedes Lackey (Although I'm yet to read book 3 so I can't comment on that one)

@prettykittyfire: I'm all about fantasy myself. Actually, I just found a second hand Rawn book the other day, just had to go and make sure that it wasn't that one. Its Dragon Star bk1... good?

you need to read dragon prince trilogy first because although they are different trilogy's they follow on from each other.

Dragon prince is about "dragon star's" dad and the stuff around his birth and his relatives and because of the way that Rawn writes (lots of history and interlinked families) you won't fully get what's going on

I know, it's nothing like Twilight, but I get this newsletter that was talking about it and it had links to t-shirts and stuff and they were like Twilight shirts. It made me a little sick. They had a bunch of shirts saying stuff about Gale and Peeta, like they were Edward and Jacob.

Bugger. So I have to track those down now. I have a long list of of books I can't get my hands on. Book 6 of the Wheel of Time; Nightmare of the Xanth series, book 4 (or book 1 of the second trilogy, I think) of the Blue Adept series, book 4 of Incarnations of Immortality. The last 2 Death Gate Cycle books. Several others that don't bother me quite as much, but I still wanna know what happens next!! Hmph!
