emo
Who made you the expert on emos?
I have more of a problem with this thread than I do with emos.
i'd say the look is a mix of gothic and punk
and the music is whiney pop punk crap.
ok, I thought they were the same with two names. I don't care one way or another I was just wondering. and I don't think goth people are cool and that emos aren't. i am just not good with words and when i wrote that post i was in a hurry as i was using someone else's internet. sorry if it came out mean it wasn't meant to. or if it came out like a know it all. i know i know nothing, that's why i was asking.
oo no don't feel bad about it brandi no one was offended.
I'm generalising here but goths tend to dress in long black clothes, new rocks (big heavy rubber black boots with metal on them) and listen to stuff like cradle of filth...but then you get peolpe who like metal that look similar. Emos tend to be very thin, with short hair but then a long floppy fringe, in black, drain pipe jeans, band tshirt, with bright colours like pink. Anybody who labels themself with a term like that is really just trying to find a place i think, you're a person not a genre of music. For me it feels like its the music press creating genres to help people understand what a band sound like but of course people are people are start labelling other people.
There's rock, prog - rock, alternative, electronica, metal, nu metal, nu rave, indie, emo, punk, pop punk goes on and on I just have 'good music' and 'bad music'
It really pisses me off not the actual "emo" but the people that go round calling people emo, jeeze I want to wring there necks because I can't go any where with out it happening.
hmmm interesting.
"Emo (pronounced /ˈiːmoʊ/) is a style of rock music which describes several independent variations of music with common stylistic roots. As such, use of the term has been the subject of much debate. In the mid-1980s, the term emo described a subgenre of hardcore punk which originated in the Washington, D.C. music scene. In later years, the term emocore, short for "emotional hardcore", was also used to describe the emotional performances of bands in the Washington, D.C. scene and some of the offshoot regional scenes such as Rites of Spring, Embrace, One Last Wish, Beefeater, Gray Matter, Fire Party, and later, Moss Icon. (In more recent years, the term "emotive hardcore" entered the lexicon to describe the period.)
Starting in the mid-1990s, the term emo began to refer to the indie scene that followed the influences of Fugazi, which itself was an offshoot of the first wave of emo. Bands including Sunny Day Real Estate and Texas Is the Reason had a more indie rock style of emo, more melodic and less chaotic. The so-called "indie emo" scene survived until the late 1990s, as many of the bands either disbanded or shifted to mainstream styles. As the remaining indie emo bands entered the mainstream, newer bands began to emulate the mainstream style. As a result, the term "emo" became a vaguely defined identifier rather than a specific genre of music."

So, there. Emo is music, and it has been for a long long time. It's not a new pehenomena, just newly popular. Just like many other styles of music, there is usually a style of dress, as well as many people who have varied beliefs as to what "true goths", "true metal heads", "true punks" are and everybody usually disagrees. People associate self-harm with emo, just like people have associated self-harm with goth. But we all know that self-harm affects a lot broader spectrum of people than just those that listen to a certain style of music.
And my opinion of emo? I don't care for the newer stuff at all. BUt I also don't care much for newer punk or hardcore. Because the styles have been around for 20+ years, they've evolved and are nothing like they were in the beginning. And I like the beginning better than the present. By the way, I wear skinny jeans and band shirts, and bright colors like pink. But i'm not what is commonly assumed to be emo.
I said I was generalising, I don't go around saying 'that person is this and that'. My problem is people jumping on bandwagons because they think it's new...like indie at the mo. Fair enough if you like a style of music but it's when people change their entire wardrobe for it. I have to admit that I stopped wearing sports clothes because I was turning into a girl (to my mums relief lol) and because of the music I got into . I like the rock n roll/hippy style, always loved 60s/70s style clothes, I just dress how I want to and I like to rock it up a bit, which is really what 'emos' have done but it annoys me because they think changing their clothes makes them who they are. The indie thing has pissed me off more, all these girls wearing stuff they would have turned their noses up at a few years ago.
I wasn't trying to make you angry, just saying that generalising and stereotyping is usually way off the mark, especially when people who are part of the 'subculture' or whatever you want to call it can't even agree on what that 'subculture' really is.
I didn't mean it to sound like I was angry, honest!
I was just making sure that you knew that i don't agree with stereotyping or generalising but sometimes stereotyping comes from truth and it was just a quick way of describing the look and music. I suppose it did start with hardcore, but like you said it's changed so much they changed the name so it is like a new thing.
a few years ago these 'emos' would be labelled goths.
Today when I was walking to my boyfriends I was behind these school kids and this lad called this girl a 'stupid emo' and she turned round and said 'chav' and I nearly said HA in the lads face, I'm assuming he's using 'emo' like people used 'goth' at me but I loved how she turned and said 'chav' right away she stood up to him. If thats what they think you are, and think you have one day woken up and said 'I'm going to be a goth!' then why would calling someone a goth or emo when thats what they 'are' offend you! Maybe they were cleverer then they looked.
i like it. i dont call myself emo although other people say thats what i am... and no i dont cut myself
I hate how cutting is "associated" with being emo, HATE IT! That's not all there is to it, self harm I mean.
Years ago the definition of emo was a punk style music with very emotionally driven lyrics. They weren't the poppy sounding songs people would consider "emo" these days either. They were raw, angry and fast.
Now emo is a style, a category to throw people in. It is a load of crap honestly. I think people who actually refer to themselves as emo are just stupid angsty losers (sorry but it's how i feel). And I hate, hate, HATE getting called one myself because I have black hair, wear a fair bit of black clothes and have tattoos etc. I am NOT emo. I am JADE!
