Your favorite spices?

I love spicy food.We eat and cook everything with too much spices.I would love to learn more about different spices and for what there used for.
The ones I use mostly are: pepper, garlic powder,paprika,dill,cinnamon,vegeta,curry...

What are your favorites? And for what do you use them?

I looove spices, my favourites are cumin, paprika, black pepper, nutmeg and turmeric.
I use them to spice up roasted vegetables, especially potatoes and butternut squash (I usually chuck some thyme or oregano in too). Also anything involving mince gets spiced up, and rice likes a bit of spice too.
I often just take the lids of the jars and smell them - which is probably kinda sad, but I love the smells=)

Dont worry I smell the spices every time i open them too... Happy
I never used turmeric...

Turmeric has a nice earthy flavour, it's also very good for you and is used as an antiseptic. It does tend to stain plastic bowls bright yellow though.

nutmeg on milk rice? sounds intresting, i will try it sometimes!!! i usually i use cinnamon to spice up milk rice... generally, i love cinnamon!!! Maybe in pies or cakes, cereals, ice cream...
also nice are coriander, cumin and cayenne pepper for mexican, indian or arabian dishes like chili, falafel, dal, sabj
and i´m a huge fan of garam masala and ras el-hanout (i found out that it contains over ten spices!) and herbs like chevril or oregano
i think every dish need spices and herbs that make them unique!

Danyia, jeera...oops sorry thats the Indian names, heck I'm trying to remember what they are in English. I also like cinnamon and paprika and most definately chilli and ground black pepper. Ah...remembered cumin & corriander.

I use most of my spices for things like stir fry. The danyia & jeera & chilli are brilliant for making Indian yoghurt. Mix with a little chopped mint and natural yoghurt and serve with bargees, pakora or kebabs.

Cinnamon is yummy when mixed with a little melted sugar, then smear on rolled out puff pastry, roll into middle from both sides, slice and cook. Danish pastries. Mouth now watering!!!

I'm addicted to curry. I fell in love with it at my favorite Indian restaurant, in my home town. I found an Asian grocery and that's where I buy packets of curry paste, which I add a teensy bit at a time to soups and chicken dishes. You can't use very much, or it will just about light your mouth on fire, and coming from a girl raised on Tabasco sauce, that's a lot.
I also love mint. I have a minute sense of smell(until a few years ago, I thought I had none at all), and only a few scents can register with my brain, mint, curry, fresh nutmeg, and patchouli being the few I've discovered as yet.

I love mint tea!
Sheila that Indian yoghurt sounds yummy,I love yoghurt in all tastes and forms.
My husband is a chilli maniac ,so every time hes cooking,my mouth burns... Happy But he is an amassing cook.
I cant make anything without ground black pepper!I use mushrooms almost every day and its no good without pepper.
My mom is a horrible cook (trust me,you dont want to go near her soups) she refuses to use any spice at all.So mainly thats why I learned so early to cook my own food.
Cinammon I use for anything with apples in it,milk rice, and my favorite cake-marmelade,chocolate and cinnamon.

Hi Violetta

I've put a link for Raita which is a yoghurt based side dish for eating with dry spicey foods like kebabs (meat sticks) or pakora(batter covered onions, potatoes, mushrooms, chicken ect). It's slightly different ingredients to the one I make but the idea is the same.

Lol.....thats the thing I miss out too. It gives me indigestion. I use bottled mint in vinegar but drain most of the vinegar off and cumin, coriander and a little chilli. It's so easy to make it to suit your taste and goes with so much
