Groceries!

So, I've really been watching my spending because I'm trying to eat healthier and eat less to help myself lose weight. My fiance's left me to do all the grocery shopping this week, and I think I did pretty well.

Total spending this week: $23.50, give or take a few cents for tax
I bought: Pepsi (for my fiance, I've been drinking looseleaf tea lately)
Cantaloupe, strawberries
Romaine lettuce, carrots
Milk, cheese
and corn muffin mix

I'm pretty proud of myself for staying away from the junk food, which is usually impossible for me to do. But, a robust salad with raspberry vinaigrette is way better than candy!

What have you spent/bought this week?

I used to do the grocery shopping when my boyfriend and I lived together. I tried to get it so I'd only spend about $50 every two weeks. If my boyfriend shopped with me though we'd spend more because he made more money than I did.

Once we went to the store together, and I don't know what we were thinking but we spent like $100 on fresh fruit then we went home and cut it all up and ended up with two HUGE bowels of fruit salad. We couldn't eat it all and ended up having to give a lot of it to his grandparents. What's even more hilarious is that a lot of the fruit we purchased neither of us had ever even heard of before. It did make for a fun experiment of taste testing that night.

Hah, yeah. When my fiance and I first started living together, we'd go nuts on groceries... two loaves of bread, too many fruits and vegetables for us to eat... We spent $113 our first shopping trip... now it's down to an average of $25 a week.
But, I forgot to get the fruit juice and potato chips he wanted today.. but he can get those himself. lol

I usually go up to Town and buy tassimo cups which are expensive but I buy to last me a month or more

We always do a big shop at the beginning of the month of things we can store or freeze and then small weekly shops of the fresh things needed which works out better because we can buy reduced price things and save money x

Wow!! Is food really cheap in the US? We generally spend about £40 a week - probs about $70 and that's being really quite careful.
I guess we do live in a quite expensive town with no cheap supermarkets but that's still a huge difference!

Some food isn't so expensive... Vegetables and fruits seem to be the cheapest around here, along with noodles, rice, and sauces.. which is fine with me because those are the healthy foods. Some breakfast foods are pretty pricy, and a gallon of milk costs as much as a gallon of gas... It's mostly just the junk food that's expensive.

a gallon of milk here is almost $7 CAD. i just paid $4.99 for a 3 pack of romaine lettuce. regular romaine, just one head, was 1.99. Basic fruit bananas, apples, oranges seemed to be through the roof. I try not to look at the price of necessities. Fruit is a necessity. I notice the price of pears was 1.99 a lb. and almost didn't get them. I decided to get two and use them in salads. Food is insanely expensive in New Brunswick, Canada. I stay away from junk food because I can't justify the expense. I bake our own cookies and muffins because I can do it for less $$. I saw doritos (tortilla chips) were 2 bags for $6. I thought that was mad!

Gas is better here this month. I think it is 1.21 a liter right now. Down 13 cents from the beginning of april

Unfortunately, sometimes it's such a dilemma between saving money or having better quality food, especially when you are a student (who very often is broke from the all the tuition expenses) Happy

I've learnt to save money by buying in-store brand or in multiples whenever I can!
