Bake a beer grain baguette and granola in #ABiteToEat with City Bakery in Asheville, North Carolina.
How did you get started?
City Bakery is an independent, family-owned company that was founded in 1999 in Asheville, NC. The baking operation was originally based entirely out of our Charlotte St location. In 2002, we moved into a warehouse on Lyman St, in Asheville's River Arts District, in order to expand our wholesale business. However, after being hit hard by the 100 year flood in 2004, we moved our entire operations to downtown Asheville, into the space formerly known as the Blue Moon Bakery. In August of 2016, we again relocated our production bakery to Fletcher, NC in order to expand our wholesale production even more. Our Downtown and Charlotte St. cafes still continue to serve our patrons delicious pastries, desserts, soups, sandwiches, and more!
Where are you located?
Cafes: 60 Biltmore Ave & 88 Charlotte St., Asheville, NC 28801
What are your specialities?
We bake a wide variety of artisan breads daily. Specializing in traditional French breads, we form our breads by hand and use as little yeast as possible in order to let our breads rise slowly, allowing them to develop complex flavors. Baked in our deck oven, we deliver to our cafes and wholesale customers fresh every day.
Our amazing pastry staff creates croissants, danish, éclairs, cupcakes, & more and bakes them fresh every day. We also offer custom cakes for birthdays, anniversaries, etc.
What's your personal favorite thing on the menu?
My favorite thing on our menu is our lunch sandwich, Grilled 3 Cheese. It's made with cheddar, monterey jack, provolone, and heirloom tomatoes and grilled on our fresh-baked City Bakery Sourdough bread.
For breakfast, I REALLY like any our Cheddar Scallion Biscuits with egg, cheese, and insert your choice of ham, bacon, or sausage here. You really can't go wrong with that one!
If I am in the mood for something sweet, I love a good Cheese Danish or one of our cream cheese brownies. SO GOOD!
What's on the stereo?
We play a mix ranging from jazz to pop to coffee-house.
Where else should we visit in your area?
Asheville is just brimming with awesome breweries, restaurants, coffee houses and more. French Broad Chocolate is great for gourmet, sippable chocolate. Nine Mile, which serves Caribbean fare, is delicious and the atmosphere is great. To grab a drink? The Funkatorium because I'm a sucker for Sour Beers.
Do you host any special events?
We'll host the occasional art show, and customers can rent out our Biltmore Cafe for special occasions (i.e. wedding rehearsal dinners, anniversaries, birthday parties, etc.).
Is there anything else you'd like us to know?
City Bakery has been awarded "Best Bakery of WNC" the last 6 years in a row.
