Mix a Garden & Gun cocktail with Julep Cocktail Club in Kansas City, Missouri.
How did you get started?
We (a husband and wife duo, Beau Williams and Keely Edgington, respectively) got off the ground by offering a cocktail catering company called Hawthorne & Julep to the Kansas City market. It was more popular than we could have ever guessed and within 2 years, opened up our bar Julep. We still offer our cocktail catering.
Where are you located?
We are located in the heart of historic Westport in kickass Kansas City, Missouri.
What are your specialities?
Well Juleps. And whiskey. But we like all booze so if those libations aren't your thing then we'd be pleased to find you something that does. Which leads me to our other specialty, hospitality.
What's your personal favorite thing on the menu?
That's like asking a mother whom her favorite child is...not possible. BUT, we hang our hats on Juleps. We offer 3 different kinds: one based on a vintage style using Pierre Ferrand 1840; our traditional one using Buffalo Trace; and finally, our Modern take of the moment (it rotates quarterly with the seasons). What's on the stereo?
EVERYTHING. We're ruled by our emotions so it's a whimsical mix ranging from 70s Rock to LCD Soundsystem to Biggie Smalls. But one thing is for certain, we're closing the bar down to the Golden Girls theme song, Thank You for Being A Friend.
Where else should we visit in your area?
We're lucky in Westport! There's a sweet little champagne bar called Ça Va just around the corner from us. Port Fonda has an awesome Mescal, Tequila selection and great for a bite as well. We often end up just down the block at Harry's Bar and Tables. It's pretty much the industry hangout, great for a beer and a shot.
Do you host any special events?
Our annual Derby Day party is hugely popular. Everyone gets dressed to the nines, seersucker and big hats everywhere you look. We have a hidden big screen that we pull out and watch Derby highlights and then the race and everyone gets into it. Plus, Juleps.
