This week we head to Suffolk, to visit The Firestation in Woodbridge and learn how-to cook their delicious Panzonella Salad.
How did you get started?
We opened in October 2013. David Wright (The Cake Shop Bakery, winner of Britain's Best Bakery 2014) opened the cafe as an off shoot of the Cake Shop. We sell cakes and snacks from the bakery and serve excellent coffee courtesy of Jack Coleman in Bermondsey, London. Not forgetting the limited edition screen prints that are on sale from Planet Patrol Gallery.
Where are you located?
We are on The Thoroughfare in Woodbridge, Suffolk. Next to The Cake Shop Bakery.
What are your specialities?
Apart from the coffee our specialities include the Nossage Roll. A vegetarian sausage roll substituting the meat for butternut squash, spinach, cheddar cheese and fennel seeds. We also offer a savoury eccles cake which my mum makes for us, spinach, feta, hallumi, walnut and lemon juice - incredible snack! But I guess the real crowd-puller is our salads. People come for miles to eat them. David has proper salad skills! Anything from giant Palestinian hand-rolled couscous with roasted veg to carrot salad with toasted seeds, coriander and a tamari dressing. Beautiful.
What's your personal favorite thing on the menu?
Personally I love the toasted bagel we do. Cheese, tomato and dijon mustard. That with a side salad and I'm happy!
What's on the stereo?
Such a variety so I'll just tell you a few that have been through the speakers recently. Lykke Li, Courtney Barnett, Herman Dune, The Mountain Goats, The Pharcyde, De La Soul, Ane Brune.....
Where else should we visit in your area?
Walberswick is a beautiful beach, about a 40 minute drive up the A12. The Anchor pub in Woodbridge serves lovely food, as does The Table. Woodbridge has the River Deben running through it so you're never far from a peaceful river walk.
Do you host any special events?
We host a knitting night called "Yap n Yarn" which is on every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month, it's a lot of fun! We also have a record night called "Wax On Wax Off" where people bring their favourite records and play them for all to hear while people can relax with a beer or a Firestation signature cocktail!
The space is available for hire after hours for parties, meetings etc. New exciting things are on the horizon for our lunch menu so keep an ear out! If you are local pop in and sign up to our mailing list, or join us on facebook and send me a private message with your details. Lots of exciting events around the corner!
Is there anything else you'd like us to know?
