Outdoor Ashtray
My boyfriend's brother who lives with us is a smoker. Thankfully he smokes outside. However, the cigarette butts in my front porch are driving me insane. Anyone have any good (preferably attractive) diy outdoor ashtray ideas I could use?
I used an old silver plated chaffing dish, with the lid from goodwill (housewares) for less than $5.00. (Basically something metal with a lid) These can be spray painted and stenciled. If you want it off the ground you could use a lamp base, plant stand, candle stand, toilet paper holder, vase, planter, etc. under it. Paint and clear coat all pieces prior to assembly. Use a strong glue (e5000 or is it e6000). For the inside use an actual ash tray or a pie tie. From the bottom, I used a lamp base, a piece of metal plumbing pole, a tray, and then the dish.Sorry I don't have it any longer to post a photo. Please post whatever you make. TM
Isn't that just RUDE!!!!?? I hate!!! CIGARETTE butts!! My friend used a terracotta pot and put sand in it and that worked nicely. and!! you decorate any way that you want.... I've been too lazy to do mine because all the butts are managing to make it into the fire pit, so my complaining went to a halt.

small one with a lid...
There aren't really that many out there... you'd definitely be one of the few that has made one... and I suspect you'll put it up on here...
you could also use a mini bin with a lid to keep them concealed
You know the bin with the foot petal...? That would be perfect!! Except decorating might be blah.
My boyfriend used to live in a house where everyone but one girl smoked, out of respect for her everyone smoked outside but they just used these cheap plastic ashtrays that no one ever cleaned out because they'd get rained on & everything would get all gross & stick to the ashtray. They looked awful as well.
Problem is with nice ashtrays that'll be able to close is they can be pretty expensive so I doubt he'll want to buy one to just put it outside where it'll rain & get all yucky. In my old house my room was right next to the back door so I smoked out back & I had an ash tray I'd use & then empty into the bin at the end of the day. My housemates smoked out front though & used a flower pot (with a plant still in it) or just threw their cig ends far enough onto the street so they weren't littering out steps, it was gross & our landlady really wasn't happy. I gave them an empty tin that had old fashioned sweets in that I got for about £1. I ate the sweets & then they used the tin as an ashtray. They could close the lid so it didn't get all disgusting & wet in the rain & they could even bring it inside as long as they emptied it out enough for it not to smell. The old timey label looked pretty cool & I could happily give them a replacement if they left it outside & it got dirty & rained on. Where I live it rains a lot, it might not be as big an issue for you but it's a good thing to keep in mind & if it keeps the rain off it also means the cig butts are hidden.
Obviously it would be more fun to craft something but something like a tin with a lid or even a jar would be an easy quick fix that you can always replace if you need to. Hope this helped
a jar with a hole in the lid big enough for the butt to fit through... interesting.....
ha ha Krista, that sounds about right!
Try talking to this guy. Maybe he can just put em in the trash.
