Hedgehog?
Hello there
So, today my brother and his wife offered to give me their hedgehog, Hermes.
I've always wanted a hedgehog for the longest time, but I'm worried I won't be able to take care of him
I know some of the basics about him, and of course there's always info on google, but I was wondering if there was anyone on here who has owned one, or does, that could maybe help me out on this one and tell me a bit about them.
I just really don't want to take this little guy on impulse and then don't be able to take care of him.
Hermes is a scared little thing because he's not handled much because whenever anyone tries to hold him, he curls and spikes up (we have to use thick gloves just to hold him). Is there anyway to get him to settle down and be more comfortble with being held?
What types of things do they like to eat (including treats)?
How is the smell? I just recently had my room de-carpted to get rid of awful smells and had it tiled, and I don't want to bring something in that's going to make my room smell bad again (I feel bad saying that D.
Thank you all for your time.
Any info would be fantastic. I hate when animals are tossed around from home to home (and I don't want the poor thing to have to go back to the petstore). I know they'd like for me to have him because they know I like him and I wouldn't be mean to him. I just want to make sure I'd be able to take care of him.
I think Angel Eve owns a hedgehog. She has one in her ID pic. Maybe you can PM her.
Thank you !
I haven't owned a hedgehog but i can offer some general advice.
-for handling, the more you do it the more he'll get used to it. which means he'll stop being scared when it happens. if he tries to fight you to get put down DON'T until he's calm. (otherwise he'll learn fighting means down)
-i don't think they smell (cousins had one). besides, people always said rabbits smell but if you clean the cage regularly and using baking soda and wash the cage it doesn't smell. i never had a problem with my rabbit cage.
