hi for pattern cutting I am using the book Metric pattern cutting by Winifred Aldrich. It s a bit technical and seems complicated at first, but when you get going, it is a great book. After that you can mal=ke your own design from scratch ^_^

The Stylish Dress Book that was up for grabs here a while ago has 6 pages of patterns available to trace, and I think it's only like $13 on Amazon so it might be a good start.
You could always make your own patterns from clothes you have that you like, especially t-shirts.

I've been using layout bond (a somewhat transparent but sturdy paper that I used to use for laying out calligraphy designs) and cheap newsprint for my patterns. Layout bond is nice for tracing, and newsprint is nice for making a pattern from scratch.

Here are four good books for learning how to create your own patterns.

1.Pattern Magic by Tomoko Nakamichi
2.Pattern Magic: Stretch Fabrics
3.Patternmaking for a Perfect Fit: Using the Rub-off Technique to Re-create and Redesign Your Favorite Fashions by Steffani Lincecum
4.Patternmaking for Fashion Design by Helen Joseph Armstrong

Hope this helps.
