10 Dollar Dinners

Am I the only one who watches that show and realizes that there is no way to make the meals she makes unless you already have the items on hand or are getting food that is long past its expiration date? I watch this show because I have made a few of her things and the potato torte especially was DELICIOUS!!!! I now use her crust recipe as a staple recipe for other pies,quiches,etc.. I just want to know if anyone else has realized this. I know that for the torte alone if having to buy all the ingredients it would be well over 10 dollars. I even broke it down before and it ended up being about $20.00 The gruyere cheese alone is 7 a half pound. I would love to know where she shops. Also the shows where she gets fresh fish/shrimp and makes an entire meal and dessert with fish for under 10? Yeah, right. I live in RI and we have fresh fsh everywhere and it NEVER EVER gets that cheap. So please explain this to me. lol

I haven't seen that show but it sounds like a load of phooey to me. The lowest I have seen shrimp is like $7 a pound... and a pound is just enough for 4 people... if you're serving them a huge salad and pasta, which is at least another $7 right there.

I don't think many dinners are possible for under $10 unless you're doing veggies or chicken with rice!

It's like this blog i read I think the author was from Arkansas, and they said you can get meat for really cheap. But I live in California and the food is really expensive here.

They could mean that it's roughly $10 per person or per serving. It seems impossible to make dinner that'll cost $10-... You could always cook it, and divide it by however many people there are to serve. That would definitely be well under $10/person. I haven't seen the television show before but they're probably having you on. With this kind of recession, it's hard enough to get by :x
