Tattoo Question..

I've been doing a lot of reading up on tattoos since I want to get one next year, and can't find the answer to this anywhere: Does everyone need a touch-up after getting a tattoo?

The tattoo I'm getting is also black, but has a little bit of shading. The reason I asked is because I'll be getting it when I go on holiday to Portugal, and I don't trust the tattoo parlours here AT ALL, so I wouldn't be able to get a touch-up if I needed one, and I don't wanna get a tattoo and then it fades =/

If it does fade it would be a few years. Unless it's on the bottom of your foot...

But when my friend got a star tattooed above her breast she got a touch-up every 3 or 4 months for a year..

It wont heal right if you scratch it when its healing. You can leave it spotted and cracked looking. Some people may have to get it touched up, some people dont. It all depends on how well you take care of it.

No. Generally touch ups are only needed on sensitive and difficult areas such as the wrists hands feet breasts elbows and genitalia. You should be fine on the arm, back, belly, etc.

ask to see a portfolio before they work on you regardless.

I have eight tattoos, none have needed touch ups(except one i gave myself for practice, i'm still learning :x

um~if you dont trust the artists there DONT get a tattoo by them, I got excited when i was 17 and got a tat by someone i thought was reputable, i was wrong~my husband worked in hte industry for 10 years, we are covered with ink and believe me it does not all look the same, I have a half sleeve of tribal on one arm thats over 10 years old, never needed a bit of touch up, on the other hand I got some black work done by a local who thinks her shit dont stink, didnt back her work and it looks like shit. you take the chance when you get a tattoo, and you will pay for a good one.

Thanks guys!

And don't worry Oddbreed, I've fully researched the tattoo parlour in Portugal. My best friend lives there and told me about it. They really know what they're doing, unlike South African tattoo parlours. There's only one in South Africa that I would go to but its over an hour's drive away and I don't have my drivers license yet.. Don't worry, I won't go somewhere that won't do it properly.

Touch-up is only necessary after a few years when the colors begin to fade....
So don't worry ;)

I would say: Start small.
My friend had a tiny daisy tat on her lower back, that rubbed against her waistband a lot.
It had only faded a teeny bit when she wanted a bigger lotus tat to go with it. Her tattoo artist touched up the daisy a little when he added the lotus over it so that it wouldn't look like two different tattoos in the same place.

I have 7 tattoos, 6 black and one color. The color one is my oldest, about 5 years, and although it's not as colorful as when I first got it done, it hasn't faded anymore. They will always be more vibrant right at first, while the ink is still fresh in your skin.

On a side note, do not ever get a ring tattoo. It hurts like a bitch, it's the worst pain ever, it made me faint and I have a high threshold for pain, (I have pierced myself in the past) but that was so bad, and on top of that, it totally fades from your skin. My ring is completely gone on the inside, the palm of my hand, and sorta faded on the outside. So yeah....skip the finger tats...lol
