Stitching
Lots of people are fed up with emails these days and I’m predicting that old-fashioned letter-writing will stage a comeback. So here’s an embroidered pen for you to stamp your mark on your pencil case – and other items too, of course. I made this simple pencil case from two small pieces of faded denim and a zip, but you could just as easily use a plain ready-made fabric pencil case

Stitches used
Straight stitch, running stitch, back stitch, stem stitch, chain stitch, French knot

  • Step 1

    Get stitching...

Work the pen outline in stem stitch using three strands of deep pink embroidery thread. Using the same thread, add two straight stitches at the base of the barrel, then, using six strands of the same thread, work the clip in chain stitch.

  • Step 2

Work the grip section of the pen in stem stitch using three strands of lime green embroidery thread.

  • Step 3

Work the nib in back stitch using three strands of black embroidery thread. Add a straight stitch and French knot at the centre.

  • Step 4

Work the squiggle in running stitch using three strands of turquoise embroidery thread.

  • Step 5

    Stitch it!
This motif is also suitable for a bookmark, a fabric school bag or a felt wall pocket.
