When did you first start sewing and how did you learn?
My grandmother taught me cross stitch when I was a little girl but I never did much embroidery or sewing until I was almost 30!
Can you remember the first thing you made?
A quilt when I was 15-16 years old.
Do you have any favourite pattern designers or celebrity sewers?
I love the embroidery by Japanese designers like Yumiko Higuchi and Alice Makabe.
What's your sewing room like and how do you organize your stash?
My sewing space is a small extension off our kitchen. There's just about room for most of what I need. I even managed to squeeze in two work tables.
What music/podcasts/TV shows do you love to stitch along to?
I don't watch a lot of TV when I'm sewing or embroidering. I prefer music and podcasts. A few favourite podcasts at the moment: the Emergence Magazine Podcast, Lingthusiasm, The Allusionist and The Infinite Monkey Cage.
Do you do any other crafts and what are your hobbies?
Aside from my work embroidery, I also embroider for fun. And I sew, mainly quilts, but sometimes clothes for myself. I have drawn all my life and I love urban sketching.
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
Embroidery is easy to get started with and doesn't require you to spend a fortune on supplies. Find a pattern you like and give it a go. Don't worry about perfection, if your stitching is a bit wonky, it just adds personality to the embroidery.
