Step 1
Exhaust pipe (base)
Using yarn A and 3mm (UK 11, US 2 or 3) needles, cast on 10 sts.
Row 1 (WS): purl.
Row 2: (kfb) to end (20 sts).
Row 3: purl.
Row 4: (k1, kfb) to end (30 sts).
Row 5: purl.
Row 6: (k2, kfb) to end (40 sts).
Row 7: purl.
Row 8: (k3, kfb) to end (50 sts).
Rows 9 and 10: st st, starting with a purl (WS) row.
Row 11: k for edge.
Rows 12–26: st st, starting with a knit row.
Row 27: k for edge.
Row 28: knit.
Row 29: (p3, p2tog) to end (40 sts).
Row 30: knit.
Row 31: (p2, p2tog) to end (30 sts).
Row 32: knit.
Row 33: (p1, p2tog) to end (20 sts).
Row 34: knit.
Row 35: (p2tog) to end (10 sts).
Break yarn, draw through sts, pull tightly and fasten off. -
Step 2
Main body
Using yarn D and 3mm (UK 11, US 2 or 3) needles, cast on 10 sts.
Row 1 (WS): purl.
Row 2: (kfb) to end (20 sts).
Row 3: purl.
Row 4: (k1, kfb) to end (30 sts).
Row 5: purl.
Row 6: (k2, kfb) to end (40 sts).
Rows 7–9: st st, starting with a purl (WS) row.
Row 10: (k1, kfb) to end (60 sts).
Rows 11–20: st st, starting with a purl (WS) row.
Break yarn D. Join yarn B.
Change to 3.5mm (UK 9 or 10, US 4) needles.
Rows 21–39: st st, starting with a purl (WS) row.
Row 40: (k3, k2tog) to end (48 sts).
Rows 41–43: st st, starting with a purl (WS) row.
Row 44: (k4, k2tog) to end (40 sts).
Row 45: purl.
Break yarn B. Join yarn A.
Rows 46–56: st st, starting with a knit row.
Break yarn A. Join yarn E. Change to 3mm (UK 9 or 10, US 4) needles.
Rows 57–69: st st, starting with a purl (WS) row.
Row 70: (k3, k2tog) to end (32 sts).
Row 71: purl.
Row 72: (k2, k2tog) to end (24 sts).
Row 73: purl.
Row 74: (k1, k2tog) to end (16 sts).
Row 75: purl.
Row 76: (k2tog) to end (8 sts).
Break yarn, draw through sts, pull tightly and fasten off. -
Step 3
Bobble on top
Using yarn C and 3mm (UK 11, US 2 or 3) needles, cast on 10 sts.
Row 1 (WS): purl.
Row 2: (kfb) to end (20 sts).
Rows 3–6: st st, starting with a purl (WS) row.
Break yarn, draw through sts, pull tightly and fasten off. -
Step 4
Large window
Using yarn F and 3mm (UK 11, US 2 or 3) needles, cast on 30 sts.
Break yarn F. Join yarn G.
Rows 1 and 2: st st, starting with a knit (RS) row.
Row 3: (k1, k2tog) to end (20 sts).
Row 4: purl.
Row 5: (k2tog) to end (10 sts).
Break yarn, draw through sts, pull tightly and fasten off. -
Step 5
Small window
Using yarn F and 3mm (UK 11, US 2 or 3) needles, cast on 20 sts.
Break yarn F. Join yarn G.
Row 1 (RS): knit.
Row 2: (p1, p2tog) to last 2 sts, p2 (14 sts).
Row 3: knit.
Row 4: (p2tog) to end (7 sts).
Break yarn, draw through sts, pull tightly and fasten off. -
Step 6
Red dots: make four
Using yarn C and 3mm (UK 11, US 2 or 3) needles, cast on 10 sts.
Break yarn, draw through sts, pull tightly and fasten off.
Sew edges together to make into a circle. -
Step 7
Wings: make three
Using yarn C and 3mm (UK 11, US 2 or 3) needles, cast on 21 sts.
Row 1 (WS): p10, k1, p10.
Row 2: knit.
Rows 3–14: rep rows 1 and 2 six times.
Row 15: as row 1.
Row 16: skpo, k to last 2 sts, k2tog (19 sts).
Row 17: p9, k1, p9.
Row 18: as row 16 (17 sts).
Row 19: p8, k1, p8.
Rows 20–30: as rows 16 and 17 above, keeping the centre stitch as a knit stitch on p rows, and decreasing at both ends as set on knit rows until you have 5 sts, finishing with a knit row.
Cast off. -
Step 8
To make up
With the fastened-off yarn end of exhaust, sew seam and stuff. Work a gathering thread along the cast-on edge and draw tightly. With threaded needle, pierce the stuffed piece from bottom centre and take needle out from top and repeat, pull gently to flatten the top and base panels.
Sew main body seam and stuff. Work a gathering thread along the cast-on edge and draw tightly. Thread yarn F and embroider chain stitches around body. Attach red dots. With the fastened-off yarn end, seam windows. Attach windows to body. Seam top bobble, stuff and work a gathering thread along cast-on edge. Attach bobble to top.
Encase the cardboard wings with the knitted pieces and sew the edges. Attach the wings to the body.
