A bright, retro print gives this charming dress a nostalgic allure.
I picked up this fabric from a warehouse near London, ON. It was a heavenly place, filled floor to ceiling with bolts of vintage and retro fabrics.

This eighth dress in my handmade collection features a peep hole in the back (a lovely way to showcase any ink you may have back there), closed with a brass shank button. Subtle pockets are sewn into the skirt, with the hem falling just above the knee. This is a perfect number for a day at the office, a trip to the beach, or a leisurely afternoon in the garden.

I'm not big on zippers, so this dress keeps its shape with an elastic waisband. This cut is specifically tailored for my shape, using an ever-changing pattern based on the store-bought dresses in my closet.

I made a pattern for the bodice, modeled after other dresses I had in my wardrobe (ones without stretch). I took my measurements to make sure that the bodice was the right size to slip over my head and shoulders without being too big. The skirt is usually two pieces of fabric, 22" x 30". I run a thread through the top of the skirt and tighten it to create the ruffles, and then pin it to the bodice and sew. I also sew a line at the bottom of the bodice about 1/2" above where the skirt is attached. The bodice is fully lined so this creates a little space for the elastic band to run. Then I carefully cut open a tiny hole inside the bodice to feed the elastic band through and tie it off where it feels most comfortable.

Cool! What pattern did you use/how did you make it? I'm looking for such a pattern for ages!
