So I'm getting new shelves but I dont want them to be boring. If they are real wood not that chipboard stuff with white plasticy paint stuff can I paint them with whatever I use on my walls (well one colour of 2 walls it's not gonna be all the same colour that would be ick.)and then sand it a bit so that it looks like it's in the grain sort of antique looking? Any body know?
I also have a chest of draws that even though they're horrible looking I really like the size so I'm gonna see if I can get the handles off and get new ones but I want to do the same sort of thing with that. But it's like chip board or mdf covered in white paint even though it looks like plastic I think it may be. So I doubt i'd be able to sand it down and get a really nice effect!
Again, anyone could with this sort of thing?
My mum and I started ripping all the wall paper off with nothing covered aha we got carried away!

I don't think paint sticks 2 chipboard but u could decoupage ur drawers which would be neat, u can paint the shelves if their unfinished, i want 2 the same thing w/ my bookcase/ desk b/c i want them to match my walls.

try crackle paints if you want an antique look. The are expensive, but look really cool. Make sure if its cheap wood you varnish, varnish, varnish, or it will chip after two weeks, or less if the piece is in constant use.
I took a look at the chest of draws and it looks like actual wood just with plastic or paint on it, i might get some sandpaper and just have a go in a corner and see what happens lol. The sides look painted the draws look like plasticy stuff. Thanks guys!

Many shelf and bookcases come with a laminated finish and your choices are limited. If painted it will peel and crack off.
If it is wood you can do anything to it you want.
Paint with a dark color and dry. Wipe a paint color lighter or contrasting on with a cotton rag for a weathered look. My daughter did this using black paint. Then she used a teal green wipe and it looks terrific. She wanted a Moroccan look to her room.
I'm gonna take a old world map. Decoupage it on the front of the dresser drawers and paint a thin line of spring green on the edges. I have some duo tone (green/blue) craft powder and am going to brush it all over the map and seal it with clear gel. I'll post it when done. I've seen this in a store that looked great for a guest room idea.

Ooh I'm redecorating too! Went out today looking for wallpaper and found some really nice stuff that looks like Cath Kidston but isn't. I'm getting a new wardrobe (mine is still there from when it was my brother's room, so it's masculine AND old and keeps falling apart) and I'm gonna paint my mirror and desk and things. So excited =)
I do need some clever ideas for storage if anyone has any?
We got paint today and I also got some funky pillows and a really cool antique looking wall hook. I might just buy an antique white dresser because I have a chest of draws and a smaller one but I need to get stuff off of the floor as much as possible so I want just one big dresser, I want to get a mirror with the same style of frame. I really do want to really do up what I already have but it's not gonna work because of the plastic of the top of the wood and I doubt it will with the other small chest of draws 
boo I wanted to recycle!
I already have a canvas with a cool print on it (I would do it myself but this is really nice and was cheap), I have prints of new york from when I went, a sketch of that street in paris where all the artists used to meet up and an etching of florence I'm also painting dandilions (when they are all fluffy) on the walls. I was going to make small ceramic tiles with patterns and stuff on them to put on the wall but it would be too much.
KK - I have one of those netted tube things with holes that you can hang from the ceiling and put stuff in, you can't put heavy stuff in them but they're great for scarves and hats and things. And I hook earrings into the small holes in the netting I got mine from a pound shop they come in lots of different colours. There's also these things that look a bit like mini hammocks that you can attach on to the wall and put stuffed teddies or again you could put shoes in it or anything that isn't too heavy

I got a really cool white lantern and a white victorian style picture frame, I'm really going for vintage looking accessories after buying that wall hook There was a lamp that would be perfect but it was 15 quid so I'll get that another time, it's got really tacky looking fake crystals on it that don't even go with the design I'm gonna whip those off with my pliers when I get it
There was also this really cool brown wooden pouperi box but I could use it for anything it was only 3.29!!!! I'm gonna buy that next time I go to that shop as well as some nice smelly things

yeh I'll take pics when it's done! The green paint is bugging me it doesn't look as green as I wanted but there was no other greens that went with the purple as well oooh well I'll just have to see when it's on the walls. Can't wait to start painting!
WA LAAA!
The dandelions aren't completely finished and the room needs 'dressing' still and one wall is only 3/4 painted but I couldn't wait to show you lot what I have so far! Apologese for the size of the pics.
