Spikes! help!

Any good tactics on making these? I've read several options

1) hot glue gun (but i'm sure it's a mess)

2) leather hole puncher?

I would suggest screw-back spikes then you would only need to make a small hole in the shoe screw the spike on. Very easy and relatively cheap.
