Too early to start thinking about christmas....?
Hi ladies and gents,
Is it to early to be thinking about making christmas presents?
My best friend and my sister are both pregnant and are due late December/early January so I don't think I want to rely on having time to make pesents in December!
I need to make ALOT of presents - 26 family and friends plus two newborns!
Any ideas? I can sew, do clay work, make some jewellery, I make cards as well.
Thanks all xxxx
Uh oh! That reminds me, I need to get started on making stuff!
No, it absolutely is not too early! Last year I would have made more stuff, but then I ran out of time! Remember, no matter how much time you think you'll have in December, it'll all go away once you hit Thanksgiving.
For gift ideas... there's always these little ornaments you could make for those more distant relatives... you know, the ones we all have that we don't talk to, don't know what they like, but still need to send a gift? Yeah, those http://www.cutoutandkeep.net/projects/how-to-dimensional-felt-ornament
These collage bags are really cool and SUPER easy to make. Doesn't take a whole lot of time, either. In terms of a handbag, it doesn't hold much. But I've used them as a photo folder to carry around in a purse when you don't want photos ruined. http://www.cutoutandkeep.net/projects/collage_handbag
These earrings would make great gifts, too! http://www.cutoutandkeep.net/projects/retro_mod_earrings
These duct tape roses look great when you make them around a pen, and you can use whatever colors you want! Good for teachers or students or anyone who does a lot of writing. (Target has the cheapest duct tape!) http://www.cutoutandkeep.net/projects/duct_tape_rose
If I could do a little shameless self promotion... I've got a How-To for a little mint pincushion that would be pretty great for any sewers. Plus you get to eat all the mints, so... that's a plus. http://www.cutoutandkeep.net/projects/pin-box-with-pincushion-lid
And last, if you want to make your own cards, why not make your own envelopes? Gives you a use for all those Christmas catalogs that are sent your way in November http://www.cutoutandkeep.net/projects/diy_envelopes
Oh, and since I've just talked your ear off (typed your eyes out?) already... Do you have the Generation T books? (http://www.generation-t.com/) If you're looking for projects for the newborns, the second book (120 new ways...) has a bunch of projects for newborns, all made out of t-shirts and t-shirt scraps. There are some pretty cute projects in there!
Never to early !!!!
Check out the how to's for what I got up to last year ;0)
I have requests for Willameana's already (see Flickr for her)
nope, never. Specialy if you are making stuff
No it's not too early, especially if you have stuff to make, and you have a lot of stuff to make. I need to get my arse into gear and get Christmas prezzie's sorted, though I don't have many to do this year as my immediate family (mum and sister) can't really afford it (neither can I) and me and my best friend have agreed that the 4 of us should just go out for an xmas meal since we get eacother crap we don't want.
So that leaves me 3 nephews, my neice, my nan and my dad and his wife. I would like to make some stuff if I can...
Thanks for all the ideas!!! I knew you'd come through!
I've just decided that I am going to make cards, wrapping paper, crackers, gift bags the whole lot this year as we are soooo skint!
for chirstmas this year i am making sugar scrubs, bath salts, a beeswax skin cream and oatmeal facials scrub. i got the recipes from a book called beauty secrets of the bible. i know it sounds weird but she has awesome stuff in that book, aside from the christian stuff.
ANYWAY good luck- handmade gifts are fun to give and receive!
Yes and no. Whilst I have no intention of thinking about Christmas I have to considering I am the gift collator of the family. I loathe the fact there are advent calenders in the shops already, it's unatural. On the plus side I have made my Christmas cake and some puddings.
I'm the master of cheese when it comes to christmas...I generally like to sew candy canes and snowflakes and snowmen...Classic wintery/Christmas stuff is a hoot with almost anyone! One year I decorated a frame with red and green sparkles and real pieces of holly and put our familys christmas picture in it..that might be an idea..? Decorating or maybe even making a frame..?
Some plushies or pillows? They're simple, yet you can do so many things with them. (Also for the pillow part, it's a good neutral present.)
As for too early or not, of course not! I'm trying to get an early start as well D: Not much luck yet, but I'm going for it <3 Going to try and make cards too.
I think advent calendars in shops now is strange as well Bryony! But that maybe as I have to get through my husbands birthday first!
As soon as my kitchen is back up and running (have been remodelling it - hence no money!) I will do my christmas cake, especially as I now have edible glitter!!
Started my sewing course last night, so was thinking of making a handbag with matching purses for each of my girlie best friends, but girls are easy to come up with ideas for - its boys I have the problems with!! Any ideas for Men's presents? xxx
Yeah Advent calenders in shops are wierd considering Halloween hasn't been and gone yet!!
I haven't got a clue what I'm going to do yet. I'm buying my mum some slippers that she'll pick out, my neice has got something so it's making something for 3 little boys really... and my dad!!
AAHH all boys I wish I could recommend something for you, but I'm stuck myself... :S
Ah yes, I've been thinking of Christmas and KNOW it's all going to have to be handmade this year.
So sorry that I can't help you with what to make the boys, I'm struggling with that too, so will be frequently popping back in to see if anyone has any ideas
for men, why not make some ties? i know i've seen a tutorial online somewhere, it might even be here on co+k. last year for hte men on my list i made some cool ear flap hats, everyone loved them. i agree that men are much harder to make for!
