Repainting Ceramics

I know it's been forever since I visited CO+K but when I had a craft issue, I knew it was the best place to find an answer.

What I want to do is paint over a finished dollar store soap dish. It's ceramic and painted with a shiny finish. I'm having trouble getting acrylic paint to hold. Now, I grant I did not wait long for the first coat to dry, but after an hour and a half, the paint was sliding right off. I don't mind waiting longer to add a coat, but I'd hate to keep painting and painting when it doesn't seem to be covering the darker parts of the pattern.

So my question is mostly if acrylic is the right kind of paint for the task. It is what I had on hand, but if some other paint will adhere better, then I'm open to the idea.

Or would some kind of prep before applying the first coat. Like a primer, but for crafts.

Any ideas? Anyone have experience? Do I just need to let the darn thing dry longer?

There are these pen, paints you can buy at a craft store.
They cook in your oven their not dishwasher safe but their said to be food safe. I've never used them since I have a kiln and unfinished ceramics but the pens will do what you want and look nice ^^
