Can you believe they would charge 20$ for this?!?

Okay so I frequently go to www.thinkgeek.com because it's an awsome site and they have TONS of really cool stuff that appeals to my geeky self but I also have beef with them because they tend to overcharge for some things.

This product for instance is called "Horror movie shower curtain" and it sells for 20$!!! My friend and I both really like it because we like slasher flicks BUT I refuse to pay 20$ for a cheap plastic shower curtain and 20$ for the matching mat! Here's a link so you know what I'm talking about:

http://www.thinkgeek.com/homeoffice/gear/b9b2/

As you can see it's just a plain plastic shower curtain (which I could get from the dollar store for a buck) with 2 red paint spots. I'm totally going to DIY this baby it will be so simple but I can't believe that they would charge 20$ for it!

i agree and i don't. i think the bathmat is worth it as any paint you'd use to place the footprints would make it very uncomfortable to stand on in those spots. but the shower curtain isn't really worth it.

Also, I'm still glad they offer it for people who don't DIY.

That is a bit pricey! I have the bath mat but I got it online on sale for around $5 Aus it doesn't look as good in person as it does in the photo!

I think the shower curtain would be easy to make DIY and you could make it looks heaps better Happy

In Israel they would charge over $50 for just the curtain. Then they would charge over $75 or $100 for the bath mat. The curtain and bath mat would then fall apart within two weeks of using them. You would not be able to return it, because it falling apart would somehow be "your fault."

I got tired of hearing this when I lived in the USA (my "overseas" friends said it all the time), but really, things are much more expensive in other countries, even considering the recession *cough*depression*cough* that is going on in the USA right now.

Also, if you want to make the bath mat, you can always use red dye. :-D

Ya, I agree with Rachie, up in Canada that would be a pretty standard price for something like that (not that I agree with it) But even if you don't want to buy it, atleast they gave you the cool DIY idea.

I had to go to the Michaels craft store the other day, I can't believe how much stuff there costs!!! For example, for a heart shaped hole puncher it was $17!!! Sorry Michaels but I will cut out my own hearts hahaha.

Before I started crafting I might have considered buying it but now that I do craft everything seems so easy to make ^^ I'm now finding myself saying "What! That's so easy to make!". But I do also agree with what Kitty said (I'm from Canada too) and I found that crafting stuff can get really pricey so sometimes buying these things would be worth it. But the shower curtain isn't. hahaha

Hello fellow Canadian Happy

I know what you mean Lo, sometimes it's cheaper to just buy the thing rather than the materials to make it. The shower curtan looks so easy to make, and fun too! Id love to see how it turns out if you do decide to make it.

Kitty - I don't know if you have them there but Hobby Lobby is way cheaper then Micheals, actually I use to shop there until I realized that Hobby Lobby takes a lot of their things and they put them on sale 30- 50% off one week and the next week different stuff 30- 50 % off and they seem to alternate weekly. It beats the 40 % one reg. priced item, but wait.. you have to wait until next week to use it and it's only for 7 days! Happy

Thx Spooky, I just did a search, hobby lobby seems to only be in the USA Happy
We do have a store called PM hobbycraft, but the prices are about the same as Micheals. *Sigh*

And that darn 40% coupon!!!! I threw away my recipt thinking I will never go back to that over priced store.. and I ended up having to go back the next week to buy a small bottle of mod podge $14!! (hard coat, it's the most expencive of all the mod podges for some crazy reason) grrrrrrr!!

Half the reason I like to DIY is to save money.. These prices kind of defeat the purpose. Oh well, atleast I have fun doing it Happy

end rant.

I think it's because not enough people DIY any more. Since they dont sell many things they have to raise the prices. I think people should just stop buying things and recycle/DIY everything. ^^

Yeah, just be glad you don't live in Argentina... They operate under the assumption that plastic is gold. It's a little freakish.

Ya, a lot of people are too busy to care..but I think our quality of life would go up if we stopped buying the cheap plastic junk made in China. Maybe our economy (and hopefully the price of craft supplies) would also improve if we bought locally.

@Chuckee.. That sounds horrible..I don't suppose real gold is treated like plastic is here? LOL!! I know a lot of people who are tossing all of their plastics, because of the nasty chemicals that leech into your food and water.

I figure they are charging what the market will bear. Non-crafters can't be bothered (or don't know how) to make their own, but are willing to pay for someone else to do the work. Plus you're also paying a premium for ThinkGeek finding it for you, rather than you having to find out about it, and track down a supplier yourself.

According to ThinkGeek, people are willing to pay $20. If they weren't, the price would drop, or the item would be discontinued.

It's not a "rip-off", but its certainly more than I'd pay for such an item

I found that hobby lobby has more of what I am looking for at a
lower price than Micheals. And I really love to go there..smile..
