Skulls, why?
Lol yea... When I reread that I felt like such a .... I don't know.. A doofus I made it seem a lot BIGGER and more thought out than it actually was. Again, Embarrassed.
But oh well. I have really heard people say that.... and... I don't know how to word this. Its not such a big deal, like... these things arn't all thought out, but its like... its like when reading a book in high school, and you are told to find the symbols and their meaning. Its like... sometimes symbols really are there, and sometimes they are supposed to be deep and meaningful, and sometimes a dog is just a friggin dog. I think it depends on the person. Sometimes a skull represents something big and logn explanation [like my ramblings] sometimes people just think its badass, like tara said.
I really hate this medication. I end up saying really stupid shit
but at least it causes amusement. .... so yea. I'm going to stop before I say anything else I will regret later.
"Anyway, memento mori doesn't mean remember the dead." "Oh, what does it mean" "It is to remember...*wistful sigh*...that we all, must die."
I love Carnival Of Souls.
Violoinagin - I bloody love you! I was trying to remember 'Memento Mori' and I could remember the english translation but not the latin ooooo thank yoou! you know when something is on the edge of coming to you but it doesnt and so it annoys you, well that's what I was like and yeeey.
Wearing skulls to morn those who have gone into the mainstream is a bit erm mainstream in itself...it's conforming just as much as mainstream stuff. I really don't like that mentality...that's not aimed at you Dis. Like punk now a days 'I know I'll have mohawk to feel more punk' I've been there as a kid like everyones telling you what you are so you think you need a label, short phase Now I wear what I want but hate that people might think I'm just an indie cindy, I don't care what people think, but I don't like being stereotyped. ANYWAY I don't like the modern Halloween, I'm gonna have my own day of the dead thing and not answer the door!
It's coffins I hate, that's the worst part of the funeral, seeing the coffin, cuz you know...inside it is...somebody you loved. And it's not because they're no longer here, it's just the shell, but I still think they're in there and don't like that they're all alone in the coffin and the last funeral I thought 'it's like it's just an ornament but he's in there!' (sorry if I upset anyone with that!)
and Topshop is evil.
Topshop IS evil. And Urban Outfitters. And any other shop where you pay £50 to buy a personality.
I hate that punk thing too, Queenie. There's a punk guy in my college, and he has a mohawk, EVERY day he wears tartan trousers and Doc Martens, and he normally wears leather jackets and sleevless shirts. It's like "Yes okay darling, you're very punk, now please get over yourself"
Yeh first time I went to Urban Outfitters I thought it was amazing but I'd only buy accessories from there, I went in to Urban Outfitters today, new one in Liverpool One. First thing Mike said when we got out of there was that it was full of like trendies...I'm not paying 28 quid for a bit of thining fabric just cuz it's got Hello Kitty on it. Although Mike bought a top from there that was 42 quid! and gets only named stuff, he's very fussy! but he's a boy, he doesn't have that many clothes so at least they last, and they aren't paper thin either. I hate seeing these girls with everything perfectly in place, where do they get the money!
You go the opposite way though with stereotyping, you start thinking everybody is fake which is just as horrible as going 'GOTH!' :o someone was on my bus the other day and had a Distillers ring tone, it was bloody weird, and then these school girls started talking about Rancid, you have no idea how weird it was for me! And I wanted to go 'I LIKE DISTILLERS!'
sorry off topic
I hated that phase a couple of years ago when it was the cool thing to wear Misfits tshirts. And I don't mean with goths, I mean like they sold them in Topshop. It annoyed me so much because I love the Misfits and they've clearly never heard of them.
There was a tshirt with a picture of David Bowie on for like £60. The exact same top is in H&M for £20, and even that's too much.
Yeh I saw one in UB that had Iggy Pop written on the front...there was those Rolling Stones ones in at one point too and ramones ones..oh well least we know who the real fans are when the fad goes away
Dis I wasn't giggling at you! I was giggling at the people who you heard say that... I know you were just passing it on! Don't feel embarassed!
Um um um I read through all that and kept thinking of things to say and now i am silenced! or motionless, since i'm typing. only obviously i'm not because i keep on waffling.
oh it's, i don't think you're paying for a personality... i mean SOMETIMES they put ridiculous things in that are unmistakably clichéd indie or punk or boho or what other else ridiculous stuff you can be nowadays, but a lot of their clothes are good steadfast staples! Like their jeans and some of their shoes, and their plain t-shirts. Not that I can afford any of it.
I've been in an urban outfitters once, almost had a panic attack from the horrifically trendy nature of it (just because i was clad in my bargain bin finds, and everyone else was looking like something out of teen vogue), and had to leave.
And Oh my god... band t-shirts in high street shops. Nyyururururrrghhh! I never liked The Ramones much, or The Misfits but it still annoyed me. And now! H&M is all Rolling Stones, Iggy Pop and Bowie... the Bowie one killed me the most though. My friend is a MASSIVE Bowie fan, and she felt almost obliged to buy it... but then she realised that all these berks who'd never even heard starman would be wearing the same thing, probably with leggings, ug boots and silly belts. she was very sad. thankfully for me, I doubt H&M are going to get any of my favourite band shirts in... Unless Jacques Brel makes a comeback. I'll be honest, I can't see it...
I hate ugg boots, they're not for outsides too! I always think wearing boots with a skirt and no tights is silly, like with tights yeh fine ok cuz your legs are still warm, mind you I did go out in a very thin cardy today to go to a pier! We went to Liverpool as you may have guessed, and we went on the beatles tour, which was shit I might add, and £12.50 per adult, but they had these AMAZING beatles tights, a beatles head and then a little guitar over and over again, I wish they made them now with that design! I need an 'off topic post' amnesty.
I love this pattern, I love skulls.
but like Roma said, all these band shirts...and some people wear them as trendy items. Once I saw someone who had a Beatles handbag and I was like I love the Beatles, and she was like I don't know who they are, I just though the bag was cool!
lol Well I understand what you mean queeny, about conforming BY being one of those kids now. But I didn't really think about how all that stuff is now "in style" I just liked it. To me... if something is "in style" and you still like it... who cares. I'm not going to NOT wear something because it would make me "hip". I don't care if its hip, I don't care if its rebelious, I don't care if its nothing. I just wear and think what I want to.
Like those GIANT ASS PEACE NECKLACES... I've notied how "peace" is comming in style... and not the philosophy or lifestyle, just the clothing. And I don't really care, but I do like peace necklaces. I do like peace signs and tie-dye, I like it. And I'm not going to NOT wear it just because everyone else does.
But yea... I don't understand why so many people BUY those HUGELY OVERPRICES band tee's you guys were talking about. If you like the stooges, you can just as easily make a stencil and spray paint a shirt. I think its a lot more fun and more ... fulfilling to make your OWN shirts [which I suppose is why I'm on CO+K].
Its like... $40 for a friggin shirt? I could get a blank shirt or some patterned shirt at goodwill and paint it. I could even just get some fabric and sew my own shirt [alas, I'm not that good yet]. I don't know...
AND I havn't seen it much lately, but a few years ago, I remember people were BUYING JEANS WITH RIPS IN THEM AND PAYING MORE FOR IT! Now I'm a girl who likes putting holes in my jeans. I like when I'm playing rugby and I fall on my knees and put some holes there. I think its cumfy and its like... memories.
but seriously... THEY JUST TAKE A PAIR OF JEANS... and rip them? and that makes them worth MORE?! I don't get it! It annoys the hell out of me. Its really not that hard to RIP your own jeans! Its hard for me NOT to!
but yea.. now I'm not a drugged induced rant about pants when this is about skulls.
I like skulls cause I think they're badass. They ARN'T nice, but I don't think they are necessarily evil or bad.. they are just... skulls.
so yea... I'm done... I probably said something in there I 'll regret, but I don't care at the moment
I'm not sure it was answered, I skimmed through the replies, but I'm pretty sure it's Latin for Remember Mortality. Or remember death. I'm not sure of an exact translation but the idea is remember your time here is short.
*looks at other replies*...Though I did buy a forty dollar band scarf. And the book of all of the musical notation. And my boyfriend a band t-shirt. Lemme see if I can get to the why...
...uh...
...nope. Got nothing for you. I wanted a souvenir to wear and I didn't like the shirts, so I got the scarf. Hehehe! That's funny etymology for you. Souvenir being french for memory, and then memento mori and it comes back to skulls. Hehehe. Though to be fair I was at an actual concert and not at Hot Topic or something.

that is great. Loved that quote.
yeah, I buy Beatles stuff for my BF, he loves the beetles and I love KISS and ACDC. So he buys me these shirts
lol I didn't think it out. I'm ALL COOL for getting the band tee's, especially if you think you can't make one as cool as one you find. Its all good. But I think the people who just buy the tee's when they could get the SAME ONE for 20 dollars cheaper, but without the label, THATS stupid.
and I agree with Michelle... its the Same with the Andy Warhol Bags.
I see a lot of girls walking around and I say I LOVE ANDY WARHOL, He was amazing as was basquiat, and they look at me like... what?
one of them actually thought andy warhol was a girl, and designs purses... lol.
even that, I'm fine with though, because if you LIKE the bags, its all cool.. but ... c'mon.. I don't know. It just annoys me that Andy Warhol is getting big... but NOT for his genius... that upsets me.
... "getting big"? whaaaatttt?? Andy Warhol's always been big, which is what makes him so annoying. haaa. He had a good idea and a good message behind his art, but it was executed so badly (imo!) But yeah- always know what your clothes/accessories are referencing. and his overexposure makes it even worse.. like renoir and monet. my god.
Uniqlo are selling Keith Haring t-shirts, and I think the t-shirt designs are super cool, but I hate Keith Haring! So no t-shirt for me.
When you go to a concert of a band you love, and there's a merch stall- buy something if you want it. that's fine! go on their website, on their shop, buy something there! but make sure some money goes to the band and you're wearing it for your love of their band, not for fashion.
