anyone got a kindle?
Looking at buying one for my boyfriend for xmas. I think he'll really like it. I went on amazon, and there's a new one out, BUT to me it looks worse than the first??
The first has a key board, but has twice the memory AND battery life of the new one. The only difference i can see is the new one is slightly smaller.
There's not much difference in price (about £10 i think) between the two, which makes me think it's not better!!
Anyone got one of either and can help me out with what they're like??
I have the new version. It arrived last week so I'm still playing.
I didn't "want" it but hubby actually works on "the Cloud" for Amazon so I'm a real test base !
Things I like are:
It fits inside my journal! My journal is currently full and I'm about to rebind it with a pocket for my KindleFire -that's probably a statement in itself.
I have two crafting books, one magazine and a trashy novel all on it currently.I also have my blog so I can share it's contents where ever there's wi-fi.Still need my Winphone to be able to take and upload images. It holds the wiki link for my class.
It's great for research for my course.
The sound is good and I can store audiobooks. The quality is good enough that I can have music to hand as I work.
I love the ability to change the background color ie my trashy novel is on a cream background which is kind to my eyes at the end of the day.
Challenges:
- hard to physically hold that may just be me.
- it's not easy to type on it.
Hubby says it's a consuming devise not a creating one,I think that works. If you man's into graphic novels (comics) it works well for that.
I have other friends who have the original Kindle and have been encouraging me to have one for a long time.
I'm liking getting to know my KindleFire.
in UK there are only 2 versions, the new one for £89 and the 3G one with keyboard for £139 if i remember correctly. in US there is waay more choice, including the kindle fire. no ETA on kindle fire in UK at the moment though
personally, I''d got for the fire, which is their answer to ipad and other tablets. I'd want it just for the colour screen. I'm hoping to get a kindle for xmas, if i do it will be the 3G keyboard one because A) its got a bigger memory, B) it has a keyboard, C) its bigger, which is good for me because small things and i don't get on.
should clear up i'm in uk! So don't mean the fire (unfortunately!) it's a choice between the one with keyboard and the new one without the keyboard.
I'm hoping for the more expensive one, £149, which is more expensive but to me, seems better then the new one. I think it's unfair that there are only 2 kindles avalibale to UK, whereas America have 7!! Kindle, Kindle touch, Kindle touch 3G, Kindle keyboard, Kindle keyboard 3G, Kindle DX and Kindle fire. (from this link on amazon.com comparing kindle section http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0051VVOB2/ref=s9_simh_gw_p349_d2_g349_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=10ZMZ8X6WQ5B899K0S8T&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846 )
I have the one with the keyboard and I love it.
I own the kindle keyboard, slightly older one than they have out now, and I have the kindle app on my android tablet. I love my archos slightly more right now because I can read manga, comics and my books, including kobo. However the kindle app is amazing. As long as I connect to the net by wifi, it will sync up where I got to in my book, including books you add to it. As long as it is on both devices it will save your notes and book marks and when you turn the wifi on your real kindle you open your book et voila, same page. It is making reading Game of thrones verrrry smooth. I love it. I would not live without my kindle now. I love books but they take up way too much room, as well as the fact I used to collect manga and have way too many of those also.
Digital is the future and I am all for it.
i know totally unfair!! If we'd had the fire available over here i'd have got that for him!!
Bought him the new wi-fi one in the end. Used points/money saved up in cashback/survey sites to get £30 towards it too just need to make sure he doesn't see it when it arrives!!
my mum got me the keyboard one with 3g and audio books. she bought it with her amazon account and gifted it at checkout so it would be able to use with my amazon account. my mil uses alternative sites to amazon to get ebooks for her kindle. when i find out what they are i shall post them here.
ok i have a list of places that do books for kindle, some are free (we all love free)

as the mil told me:
"the Kindle will read any .MOBI files and a few others (or there's a utility to change formats)

Our library in Bellevue lets you download books for free
my uni library has QR codes to textbook e-books, not sure if they are free though, i haven't bothered to look as I don't have a QR app, and their online system is really confusing. My library card has expired because I didn't use it for a couple of years.
oooh thanks for the links!! Think i read somewhere that UK don't have any libraries giving free kindle books away yet..boooo
I'm sure he'll find some free ones to keep him going!
there are loads of free ones on amazon.co.uk and they have different free ones every week. i'm using the kindle for pc app to look at books at the moment, plus the people who publish warhammer books also do them as ebooks and xmas bundles, i feel my OH will be borrowing my kindle....
ive been playing around with downloading free ebooks from places like kobo and using calibre to convert it to mobi format for kindle, i also converted some pdf's. i havent put them on a kindle (because i don't have it yet) but they can be read on kindle for pc app
