If you're a more advanced reader, like 20+ or just really smart, Frank Herbert's DUNE series is really great, as well as books by Dan Simmons like the Hyperion series.

I love Anne Rice- Pandora is a particular favorite.
I am actually loving the Beautiful Creatures Series.
Vintage books written the 40's and 50's I have a Bernard DeVoto on my shelf waiting for me.
I am really into fiction. Intense fiction.

I'm currently reading the Shatter me series by Tahereh Mafi, she has a very different writing style but I love it, I almost can't put the books away.
If you like books that can be read just as a story, but also have a deeper meaning, for example criticism on modern society,religion and stuff, try His dark materials by Philip pullmann, or the Gone series by michael grant (pullmann is more 'adult' literature than grant)

I would definitely suggest the Percy Jackson and Hero's of Olympus series! Percy Jackson is geared more towards pre-teen/younger teens (they're still great though!) But Hero's of Olympus starts to get a lot more mature and intense.
