Sewing Machine Help!

I was just on my sewing machine and it started going really slow, even with my foot all the way down. I then noticed there was a little bit of smoke coming out from the upper unit where the needle comes down and where the light is and all the motor and belts etc.

Does anyone know what the cause of this could be or what could be wrong with it? Unfortunately I don't know much about sewing machines hence my limited sewing machine vocabulary :-P

I stopped using it straight away as I don't want to do any damage. Any help is much appreciated!

It sounds like the motor has seized=( If you have a sewing machine shop or even a fabric shop (the staff often sew) you could ask about getting it fixed.

Oooh just thought have a look under the bonnet and see if anything is jammed, maybe a belt has slipped.

Ah brilliant I will go and have a look. Thanks for the suggestions Laurel! If I can't see anything then I'll have to go into the local and ask about it. Damn! Just when I have 3 weeks off uni and I have loads of things I want to sew... Bad times indeed Happy

Hi Ruby
Totally agree with Laurel. Anything with smoke is usually the motor or the belt. Check for 'fluff' around the motor spindle and check your spool casing under the foot, sometimes it slows things down if it's blocked.

Thanks ever so much, even if it isn't 'fluff' it could probably still do with having a clean. At first I thought it might have been because I haven't oiled it but I'm not really sure what bits and pieces need oiling :-s

I'm going to get my dad to look at it (mechanic and generally good with fiddly mechanics), and if he can't see what the problem is then I'm gonna have to trek it to the sewing shop.

Thanks for your help Sheila Happy
