Using LED lights in projects

I've had some success making steampunk guns and accessories. I want to add some lights but am not sure how to add them. Do I buy a string of lights and thread them through the piece? Buy one at a time and attach them somehow? It's important for steam punk items to look like they would actually work so I think the lights would be a nice touch to add. Any input would be much appreciated.

I made a steampunk eyepatch for La Carmina a while ago and used a battery powered LED to light it up. It was a little fiddly but she could just insert and remove the battery to turn it on and off.
