I want to start making clothes too Happy Im gonna start buying patterns.. I think you pin the pattern to the material and cut it out, then they tell you where to sew. Ill get some practice with that until I feel good enough to come up with my own designs.

I suggest you start off by learning some basic sewing techniques.

Hi!!
as tracy said, basic sewing techniques are quite good to know. when i started sewing i had some really big problems to understand the "language" of the pattern instructions, even they are for "laymen"
it sounds stupid, but practicing to sew straight or curves is also very helpful, at school we did that with sheets of paper, drawing lines on it and than sew it with a sewing machine without thread.
tote bags and pillowcases are good to start with (i know it´s a bit boring), because they don´t have many or complicated seams and are finished rapidly so you doesn´t get much frustrated if something gets wrong. trust me, thousands of totes that are really nice make you much more happy than a "jacket" that turned out too small and crooked. also there is less expensive fabric you have to throw away... mmh, that was a bad experience *sad*
when you think you can take a step forward, buy an easy pattern and have a try. next time maybe a pattern that´s a bit more tricky. someday, maybe you can make a jacket or a coat.
oh my, this advice is basically autobiographically!!! how scary!
i hope i could help you a bit!
have fun sewing your own clothes, because it´s soooo amazing

Very good advise LaLa!! What she said Emma. I remember doing all that when I was in home ec in school. When I was junior high, we made an apron and a patchwork pillow. Before I got to high school, my grandmother gave me a sewing machine and because I knew the basics, I started making my own clothes. I made a couple of tops that I got compliments on and because it was just the ninth grade, many of my friends couldn't believe I made it from scratch, without a pattern. Then when I took home ec in high school I learned how to use a pattern, I hate them even though I have a mess of em!! You gotta cut out the pattern and then basically cut it again after you get the material laid out. Such a pain in the arse with all that cutting!! When you do try your hand at a pattern, there are ones that actually say they are easy, like a dress with no zipper, a wrap skirt with no buttons and you can make them at various lengths. I still sew clothes on ocassion, but I've been wanting to get back to it but make my own designs. You may have inspired me to get in gear, so thanks! And good luck with whatever yourfirst project turns out to be.
