I so want to make my own bento lunches too. As it stands when I had a bento I only put left over Chinese from the previous night in it.
I got this recipe for a nice bento lunch too, I've just never made it. Cat you inspire me to make my own.

This was my bento set before I somehow lost it in the cleaning of the car or apartment. Happy

also it makes everything neat proportions so you don't over eat.

Reading the Bento Yum blog has convinced me I REALLY need to start packing my own lunches. If I choose the right stuff it won't be a soggy tasteless mess by munch time.

I'm going to make a menu and go to the grocery store to buy what I need.

I made a bento box for my first day of college, it had vegetarian sushi, noodles, carrots and cucumbers cut into heartshapes, babybells, some cherry tomatos and a little cupcake. I wish I had the time to do them but I'm sosobusy these days, I leave the house at seven and don't get home till like six cause my college is sillyfar away.

I LOVE Oriental food though. I go crazy for rice and beans and pasta and lentils, anything like that, and they have a great range of vegetarian food. And it just looks so damn pretty! I either use my Hello Kitty plastic box or my Invader Zim tin =)

Wow! I heard of bento boxes years ago. I actually saw it on Martha Stewart Living. She packed a bento box for a newlywed couple for their wedding night. Other then that, I've seen bento on Asian food menues and such, but I had no idea there was actually bento boxes like the ones you've been posting! Now I totally MUST have one! So are they popular where you are? I'm guessing by the mention of Tesco that you're somewhere in the UK? I live in the US, and I think we're definitely missing out!

Anyway...for those who don't know what bento is, see:

Now to buy my own bento box...

Cat....I'm so impressed by your food selection! I really need to start eating like you! But...I do have some questions. What is quorn? What are spring onion fritters? And edo chocolates? And pocky pots? lol...I thought I was well versed in cuisine...but obviously I was wrong lol. Also, do you have a recipe for the coconut and taro cake? It sounds yummy. Never heard of taro being used in a cake. And sugar cane drink? Is that oriental? Never seen those before either...so many interesting things! I definitely want to try them.

Quorn is a vegetarian substitute for meat. It's made of some sort of funghi that can take the flavour of meat well, and the texture too.
Spring onion fritters, I imagine, are like spring onions mixed with batter and fried.
I'm afraid I've no idea about the Edo chocolates, and pocky pots are like these little sweet breadsticks with a chocolate or strawberry dip in a little plastic cup. Pocky Pots are specifically an oriental thing and you can only get them from oriental food stores, but I think KP (?) do one, and KP is an english company, or is it worldwide? I don't know I just know i can buy them from my local newsagents.

Also Bentos I think are easier to get in America! Most of my friends have no idea what I'm on about when I mention bento box and if I try to get one online I have to use ebay international or something. They're mainly Asian, aren't they? I so badly want an An Pan Man one.
