Cruelty-Free makeup
The Body Shop is brilliant. I researched them for a Business assignment of mine. They are the most ethical cosmetics company that I have come across thus far!!
I wrote a article on morbidoutlook.com many moons ago but it should help you.
I can advise you where NOT to go, I know you're in the US but I'm not sure if they have any branches out there, but there is a similar shop to the body shop called loccitane or something along those lines, they claim to be ethical and stuff, I don't think they are cruel to animals and stuff but they aren't as environmentally friendly as they make out. Infact their has been publications scorning them.

Smashbox is also cruelty-free
They offer free shipping, bonus stuff, "how-to get the look" etc. (plus they have a Midwinter collection by Tori Amos YAY)
I recommend LUSH, and also you should check Origins makeup line, but I am not sure if it is vegan, though it should be. I know they have makeup brushes that are completely synthetic, but even though they are synthetic, they are perfect for sensitive skin and have no harsh chemicals and little impact on the environment.
Barry M don't test on animals and I have used them for a while, really gorgeous colours and quite a variety! I've not heard of some of the others you're all on about so will have to check them out myself :-D
I agree with Heart, Lush is FANTASTIC. I love their products <3
If you're looking for makeup, everydayminerals.com has some great stuff, and you can get a packet of free foundation samples if it's your first time ordering. :3 The eyeshadow colors they have are pretty~
