DIY The Room

Create a mermaid hideaway in #DIYTheRoom with Jennie.

Between trying to beat the summer heat at the community pool, and going to see Disney's The Little Mermaid last week, I seem to have mermaids on the brain right now. If a seaside vacation isn't in the budget, how about a little crafty redecorating to make your very own Mermaid Hideaway? A combination of cool blue and turquoise hues, soft furnishings, a few well chosen seashell accessories, some ocean inspired artwork and you'll soon be under the sea!

Recreate the look of Maleficent's castle in #DIYTheRoom with Kinhime Dragon.

While most people see Maleficent as the villain, like when the original animated "Sleeping Beauty" came out long ago, but now we learn from Maleficent that monsters are not born, they are made. I see the Queen of Fairies with a room in Aurora's castle, however her room is not like the other rooms in the castle because it's got a dark fantasy or gothic feel to it, with furniture depicting the darker side of fairy tales, such as Ravens, crows and maybe even some beautiful poisonous flowers. True it's dark but it's gives off a mysterious aura that people love.

Create the perfect tidy and organized bedroom in #DIYTheRoom with Jen.

My daughter recently turned 12 and we have two challenges related to her bedroom: keeping things tidy and organized, and transitioning it from looking like a young kid's room to a preteen's room. I found some amazing, inspiring ideas on Cut Out + Keep that I gathered into a list. Some are a snap to do, and others take a bit more time and skill. I hope this collection helps give you some ideas if you too are looking to update and tidy a preteen girl's room.

Recreate the home of Daisy Buchanan from The Great Gatsby in #DIYTheRoom with Miranda.

Daisy Buchanan - cold-hearted socialite or victim of her time and circumstance? Either way she epitomises the glitz and glamour of the 1920s. I think her house would be filled with gold, art-deco styling such as the hanging geometric ornament: its simplicity is striking. The Chanel vase would be right up her street too. For all the glamorous parties she would have her maid create these confetti filled balloons (and clean up afterwards) and I have even included a Scrap paper dolls house project for her 'beautiful fool' of a daughter. I think these looks would be great together in a bedroom which is always a good room to indulge your glamorous side

Create a purple hues explosion inspired look in #DIYTheRoom with Gail.

I love all things purple and when it comes to decorating, I love using it as an accent... warm and inviting with a touch of excitement! Shades of purple accents really helps to brighten those lonesome neutrals in decorating!

Recreate the room of Marinette from Miraculous in #DIYTheRoom with Pramodini Arela.

I love the girly-ness of Mariennettes room but also the minimalism and intentionally functional details.

Recreates the home of Kathleen Kelly (played by Meg Ryan) in the movie, You've Got Mail in #DIYTheRoom with Beth.

I love that Kathleen Kelly’s room has a light, airy, country feel to it. It truly reflects her cute personality!

Recreate the style of Monica's apartment in Friends for #DIYTheRoom with Cassie from Cassiefairy.

Monica’s apartment from the TV show Friends must be one of the most recognisable rooms of the 90s – I feel as if I know it as well as I know my own home! Monica’s style is quite ‘granny chic’, with a few playful colours thrown into the mix. She inherited the apartment from her grandma so some of those traditional pieces of furniture remain in the apartment, but Monica has upcycled the chairs and given the kitchen a lick of paint to put her stamp on the place. As a chef, she needs plenty of kitchenwares (and space to store them), as well as lots of coffee cups for entertaining her friends, of course. I’ve included one of Monica’s favourite tutorials in this list – scented furniture polish – to make her apartment sparkle, and to get rid of the whiff of smelly cat!

Recreate the style of an Icelandic living room in #DIYTheRoom with Justine from The Thrifty Girl's Guide.

I'm now obsessed with Icelandic style after a trip to Reykjavik last month. Minimalism, texture and natural wood were common decor elements everywhere from shops to homes, and this living room also reflects the warm hospitality and friendly nature of the people!

Create a gorgeous recycled home in #DIYTheRoom with Second Hand Susie.

These recycled home accessories could be used in any room, and it just goes to show that redecorating doesn't have to cost you lots of money, and it doesn't have to cost the Earth either! There are plenty of clever ideas here, from a bench made from pallets, to planters from a coffee pot and wall hangings upcycled from table mats. picture frames and old jeans - there's even a cute little cardboard house for your kitty friend! Choosing a grey and blue colour scheme with plenty of houseplants will makes for a cool and chilled eco friendly home.
