Braids and twists are great because you could use the same amount of yarn but it'll look completely different then a straight pair.
I made a pair where I left out the straight strands and made just twists and braids and they are HUGE! haha. So if you want volume, always think twists. Haha.

How did you make yours? Did you leave the strands straight?
My rainbow falls are composed of straight strands, braids, and twists. All the volume comes from the braids+twists
