Make a doll out of a wooden spoon!
My step-dad got a little too enthusiastic while mixing the batter for a chocolate cake... and broke the spoon he was using. I decided to put the pieces to a new use~

I will make another tutorial for the clothes... eventually.

I got this idea from an old craft book that I found in my basement.

  • How to make a figurine dolls. Wooden Spoon Doll - Step 1
    Step 1

Cut out a piece of skin-colored felt about the size and shape of the bowl of the spoon.

Hot-glue the piece against the turned in part of the spoon.
This will be the back of the head.

  • Step 2

Sketch out the design for the doll's face in pencil.
For a realistic face, draw the eyes halfway between the top and the bottom of the head.

Outline it in black permanent marker.

  • How to make a figurine dolls. Wooden Spoon Doll - Step 3
    Step 3

Carefully fill in the eyes with white nail polish. Paint as many coats as you like.

Next, paint in the iris of the eye.

(Make sure the iris touches some of your eye's outline, unless you want your doll will look really creepy.)

Take a darker shade of the color you just used for the iris. Paint the top half of the iris in this color to add more depth.

Next, select a lighter shade of polish than the one used in step B. Place a couple of dots in the iris where the two darker shades join.

(Try substituting one of the light spots for a rhinestone.)

  • Step 4

Pick a shade of pink or red for the lips (any color, really!). Paint the lips in this color, or paint the top lip and bottom lip different colors.

OPTIONAL: Get a light, shimmery hue and dab on the fuller parts of the lip to make them pop.

  • Step 5

Use colored pencils to add blush to your doll's face. You can also add eyeshadow if you like.

  • Step 6

Pick some yarn to use for hair. Wrap the yarn around a book, and then tie a tiny bit of yarn around it so that it doesn't unravel.

Opposite of the knot, cut the hair so that it's all the same length.

Glue the knot of the yarn on the head so that half of it falls to either side. Glue strands of hair onto the felt on the back of the head until it is fully covered.

  • Step 7

Cut out, sew, and stuff a basic rag doll pattern for the body. The handle of the spoon will go into the neck and through the crotch (haha... very funny, I know.)

Apply hot glue around the base of the doll's neck, and press the body into place.

  • Step 8

Take the 3" x 3" block of wood, and drill a hole in the center that is the width of the spoon's handle. Glue the handle into the stand and let dry, holding the doll in place.

So the thumbnail photo isn't representative of the finished product, right? Are there any photos of the finished doll?

Faces... Gods! the hours they stood over me with a ruler to make me get the damned things just right!
I now have no ruler over my head, but a wooden spoon?
