...
found a red record a while back and wanted to do something with it - still have the rest sitting and waiting for that perfect project I have yet to brainstorm.

I have since ruined that record so you'll have to just visualize my how-to on some of the steps :P

You Will Need

  • How to make a recycled ring. Vinyl Record Ring - Step 1
    Step 1

find a record you don't mind destroying - I get mind from thrift stores. if you're gonna use a black one, try to find something already broken or scratched up since those are usually cheaper! I got mine for $1, but I really wanted the red!

  • How to make a recycled ring. Vinyl Record Ring - Step 2
    Step 2

measure around the finger you're going to use - multiply that by 3 or however many times you want your ring to wrap around.

  • How to make a recycled ring. Vinyl Record Ring - Step 3
    Step 3

find something you want to use as a ring form to wrap your vinyl around.
I think I used the handle of a kitched utensil, but a dowel or anything like that will work. just make sure it's the size you want your ring to be.

  • How to make a recycled ring. Vinyl Record Ring - Step 4
    Step 4

    heat oven to 150°F.
put your record in the oven on some foil and watch it!
when it starts getting flimsy, pull it out and cut a section off big enough for your ring.

  • How to make a recycled ring. Vinyl Record Ring - Step 5
    Step 5

put the small piece you just cut off back in the oven and let it soften again.

  • How to make a recycled ring. Vinyl Record Ring - Step 6
    Step 6

when it's soft enough, cut the strip out.
this is the part to be careful with since this is the actual ring strip.
decide how thick you'll want to cut the strip for your ring.
I just followed along some of the lines of the record, but you can cut a straight strip with a blade and a ruler.

  • How to make a recycled ring. Vinyl Record Ring - Step 7
    Step 7

put that strip back in the oven and let it re-soften.

  • Step 8

when that one is soft enough, pull it out and quickly wrap it around your form.

  • Step 9

if you cut along the line of the record, it may want to curve since it's circular - just give it a little pull as you wrap while it's hot and it'll straighten out.

  • Step 10

you probably won't get it perfect the first wrap. just keep reheating it and try again until it looks how ya want it.

  • Step 11

if the edges are too sharp, just use a little fine grit sandpaper to round them a bit.

Try doing it with hot water (just from the kettle) its easier to maipulate and isn't too hot! + you don't have to keep getting it in and out of the oven!

Thanks, I tried to make mine without the how too and just wrapped the record around my finger while it was hot. I wouldn't suggest that. haha!

I love it! A good friend of mine bought one at the shop of La Pedrera (in Barcelona) that is just like this one! ÜÜ It is wonderful, really.
