Ideas and instructions from 2 tutorials.
I used this tutorial for the thread catcher and caddy:

I added a sewn muslin bag weight (with aquarium gravel) to the pincushion as well as some velcro strips to keep it in place and also allow me to take it with me to another work surface.
It ended up not being quite heavy enough to keep the caddy in place, so I added a square of grippy shelf liner to the back of the caddy and it worked perfectly.
